And what does our hapless president do to fix the problem - oh yeah, he brings in more homeless children for political purposes. What a compassionate guy. Liberalism at it's finest.
I blame the Republicans.

This is a result of the do nothing congress, the greed of the corporate billionaires who don't pay their fair share of taxes, and the state legislatures for their Scrooge-like preference for corporate tax breaks at the expense of poor and working people.

Apparently its on the rise. Probably not the data point you expected (and not the one I expected either)
That appears to be a cultural thing. Some ethnic groups do not want to live that way as there are drawbacks like a lack of privacy. Besides, when you have adult workers and kids going to school in the household who is going to take care of their elderly while they are away?

If you go to the actual study it's due to
-"kids" staying at home til they are 26-28
-growth in Asian/Hispanic populations in the US - these cultures tend to live multi-generational.

Do you see the irony?
The first Reverse Mortgage was written in 1961.

In 1988, Reagan signed the FHA insured Reverse Mortgage Act into law and put the federal government on the hook.

FHA got skunked when regional ( California, Arizona and Florida) and national housing bubbles popped. Changes were made to allow only up to 60% of home equity to be withdrawn in either a lump sum or monthly/ annual payouts.

Article says the most homeless children live in CA.
Why on earth are poor people trying to live in CA ? Heck, even middle class folks can't afford to live there.

Multigenerational living was and remains the norm for most first and second generations, regardless of nationality. Almost everyone I knew growing up had a grandma in a closet.
