Latest Pew Research results that address this question: Do guns do more to protect people or do they put more people at risk?
Comparison of 2012 results vs 2014 results. Men, women, whites, blacks (by a huge increase), conservatives, independents, moderate democrats all say that guns protect more people than they put at risk.
The only group that saw an increase in "guns putting people more at risk" from 2012-14? Liberal Democrats.
Good link; interesting numbers. IIRC Gallup found that support for banning handguns peaked around 1959 and has been declining ever since. It's largely due to the NRA. Other nations have seen their rights disappear, because they had no NRA.
We can thank the anti-gun crowd themselves. Their dishonesty and demagoging on this issue has ruined their credibility. Examples: when the polymer framed Glocks appeared on the scene in the 1980s the anti-gunners claimed they were "plastic" terrorist guns that couldn't be detected by x-ray machines. If they had bothered to do a couple of minutes of research they would have learned that Glocks show up on x-rays as well as any other gun with a metal barrel and internal parts. They had to eat crow on that one. They also like to refer to semi-automatic weapons as "machine guns". Again, two minutes of research and they could learn the difference (if they wanted to). And probably what has hurt their credibility the most is their demagoging on the matter of "shall issue" laws. I remember when my state was considering passing "shall issue" (it passed) and the antis were making predictions of "wild west" type shootouts over parking spots, minor arguments, etc. Well, it didn't turn out that way. As a matter of fact, people that have concealed carry permits are some of the most law abiding citizens in the country.
Don't forget the false claim that 40% of gun sales do not have background checks. That was based on a survey of 251 people back in 1994.
