Hopefully the OP moved from Kentucky to Illinois where he can fully enjoy higher property taxes seeing as how in 2010 the Median Real Estate Taxes Paid (Cook County) $4,015 compared to the Median Real Estate Taxes Paid (Jefferson County) of $1,353.

But we must ask ourselves how can any family afford books on a $2,600 annual budget?

Exactly. Or donations.

Reduce headcount drastically.

Quite a few poor students use libraries.

The dumbing down of America by the tea party.

A recent article from the Washington Times:
Court to decide between lower property taxes, library funds - Washington Times

And, a recent article from Kentucky's own Lexington Herald-Leader, where one commenter on the board described Kentucky libraries as "arrogant":
Kentucky appeals court considers cases that threaten funding for dozens of libraries | Politics and Government | Kentucky.com

This is "fiscal conservatism is our premise" gone too far. I'm also glad I don't live in Kentucky anymore...

I love it!

Instead of taking a cut in their exorbitant pay for what they do at the city council, they choose to get rid of a library....

I guess I don't get how objecting to unelected people arbitrarily raising taxes on property owners without the benefit of a law to do so is fiscal conservatism "gone too far."

The plaintiffs are not against libraries or funding libraries. They are against libraries raising property tax with no input from the public and no authority to do so.

I hope the plaintiffs appeal to the state Supreme Court. I do agree with the Appellate Court that the "legal issues regarding taxing authority is best addressed by the General Assembly, not the courts", so why is the appellate court creating a law and authority that the General Assembly itself did not? The best remedy is to return the issue to the people through their elected officials, not though unelected library boards.

Most people now carry around a full library in their pockets.
