It is genuinely surreal how bad the level of basic communication is in the healthcare system. Most of these idiots have only gotten their jobs just as a way to make money. This means most of them are just doing ir for a paycheck and lack the level of compassion and intelligence to be good at what they do.

Got a call from a nurse today who apparently dialed the wrong number but left me a fast and nearly incomprehensible message. Trying to return her her from her poorly communicated message took nearly a half hour to find out she had dialed the wrong number. Dealing with the phone answering system and operators was totally ridiculous. These people are idiots. The problem is not having people with no health insurance in America, it is finding and getting intelligent and compassionate workers with integrity for people to work in it. It is unbelievable. I am not basing this rant on one experience. It is disgusting.

It's also genuinely surreal how someone can criticize someone else's communication, and do so via text filled with typos and misspellings.

I have had VERY POOR success getting a proper diagnosis, for various health problems, when going to a general-practitioner. I don't know if the GPs just didn't care, lacked diagnostic ability, didn't like me personally or considered me a faker or liar............but me treatment seemed to fall very short of what I would consider "good"(surgeons and specialists have done me great.).

Communication - ACCURATE communication is so important in with most things, but even more so with health care.

It is getting worse with new electronic medical records which will ONLY allow the health care workers to select pre-provided answers from drop down lists. Little notes to the side and additional comments are not allowed!

Removing inaccurate entries is impossible! Nurses and medical records types will say: "I am not allowed to remove that! Only the doctor who originally entered that information can remove it." (The doctor who no longer works here? Or the doctor who is too busy to do this?)

"Hello! Yes I would like to make an appointment with my doctor to see him about correcting my inaccurate medical record..."

Sounds like you called New Jersey. I don't see this as typically related to a medical business, but a general business failure. And in my experience I seem to get this sort of bad interactive phone response from New Jersey businesses. Of course your mileage may vary.

This is a plague related to the template paradigm that many EMR's and docs have adopted. As a doc I haven't gone this path, and use Dragon to dictate specific notes into the EMR. But any doc caring for the patient can amend the medical record.

The EMR is far from ideal, but at least everyone can read it!

I have to agree with your assessment. I recently started seeing a new doctor. She referred me to a specialist and when I showed up to see that specialist, the information she had was that I was a lawyer (I'm an artist) from a town that is pretty far removed from my actual residence. I informed the specialist that the information she had was wholly incorrect.

I then received a bill for services rendered... but it was actually the aforementioned patient's bill, not mine. Close to $1000, too! I was taken aback by it until I realized that I never even had the procedures they were billing "me" for!

I went to the local pharmacy to get the prescription the first doctor had prescribed for me. The pharmacist looked at the prescription and said, "You need to go home and call this number because I can't fill this for you until you yada yada..." I went home and called the number, not exactly sure what in the world I was even calling about. I spoke with a woman with a very strong accent and we had immense difficulty communicating. She assured me that all was right in the world and I should go back to the pharmacy to get the prescription filled. I handed the prescription to the pharmacist, who promptly said, "You didn't need to call anyone about THIS one." Umm, okay, then why did you TELL me I needed to call someone? He filled the prescription and I noticed that my name was misspelled. Having gone through all this rigamarole previously, I immediately said, "My name is misspelled on this prescription and it concerns me because..." and that was all I got out because the pharmacist held his hand up and said, "Don't worry about it. It doesn't matter. You have the right prescription." Yeah, okay. I mean, it's not like any of these mistakes can KILL me or anything. Gawd. Annoying how you have to do peoples' jobs for them.

I'm heading out in about an hour to have a mammogram. If I end up in surgery for a lobotomy, I'm going to be really irritated.

" It is disgusting."

What is disgusting, is YOU chastising an entire industry of hundreds of thousands of people because of 1 telephone call.

Why don't you fly to Cuba, or Russia, or Venezuela, etc. for your care if you think what we get here is so bad?

I certainly recognizes and "know nonsense" when I read it!

in this day in age, we are constantly moving around and looking for the quick fix. the magic pill that cures everything right now. and when we dont get it we move on to the next doctor, and the next, and the next, and so on until we find the one that fixes are issue, or gives us a proper diagnosis.

but the problem is that we dont spend enough time with the first doctor to get to know them, and for them to get to know us, so that lines of proper communication can be established, and tests be run to figure out exactly what is going on with us.

for instance i have one GP that i have seen since 2001. and like any relationship it took time to develop. since 2007 i have had one nephrologist, again it took time to develop that relationship. and since 2007 i have had one endocrinologist, one eye doctor, and one heart doctor. again each of these relationships took time to develop. i didnt always agree with what they said, but we worked together on my health issues, and i have been satisfied with each of my doctors, and i would recommend them to anyone.

The last digit of my land line is one off that of a prominent surgeon's office. His hospital and patients have been miss dialing for the past 12 years. I can go a few weeks without a call and then get 3 in a day. Maybe it's a lunar cycle thing.

Like you, I usually call people back to let them know they have dialed a wrong number. Occasionally I even know the patients. The mature patients are a hoot and can talk all day. I have not run into the challenges you have. If I did I would probably change my VM to let people know that if they are trying to reach, XYZ, they miss dialed and try again.

Have a nice day.
