It's 100% about Obama's war on drugs. Traffic stops 100 miles from the border have NOTHING to do with border patrol.
The interior border checkpoints go back to the 40's, though they weren't permanent stations until the late 60's or so. As for the war on drugs, I believe Nixon started that, and it was ramped up considerably by Reagan. I don't know if American historical ignorance or political partisanship is more depressing.

The checkpoints were built in the early 1990's, under HW. Bush.
They served the purpose for only a few years. Then no illegal alien got close to them. Taking a different route.
Now, all they are is a "show me your papers" check on the US population and hassle people. A clear violation of the 4th amendment and the 5th amendment.

Not "wrong!". I-25 goes north from El Paso. El Paso/Las Cruces is a lobster trap. You can't leave El Paso/Las Cruces by road without hitting a a checkpoint - this includes I-25.
Checkpoints have been around forever, remember them as a kid. They are farther in now, but so what. I don't have a problem with checkpoints within 200 miles of the border. Heck, I called border patrol from my mobile about an illegal squatting in a Panhandle field (highway 87). I knew they were looking for him because I passed their van a couple of miles back. Either we have an illegal alien problem or we don't.

Some would have us play without linebackers or defensive backs.

But it makes the bootlickers feel all warm and fuzzy inside! They should go all out and spread their anal cavity open for inspection since they're so "law abiding" and "have nothing to hide".

I got caught in a bad traffic backup in one last year. Finally, they waved all of us around and didn't have to go through it. Its all smoke and mirrors.

The backside of 'Dona Ana mountain' is a trek or 4 wheel drive on poor tracks through he desert.
Hwy 187 is north of the permanent checkpoints so I'm not sure what your point is. The wiki list you posted is incomplete.
