First step to improving the education system would be to eliminate government involvement entirely along with the public money it uses to inflate costs and brainwash students.
I suggest reading some of the arguments against the GI Bill to pay for college for returning WW2 veterans. Mostly they were concerned with expense and with dilution of the college educated elite's cultural purity.

Smart people are more likely to pursue higher education. Those stats you cite are to be expected. Still, it does not mean the answer to America's troubles can be solved by "free" education (doesn't exist anywhere on the planet by the way)... It's simply more armchair rhetoric.

They can if they are also certified in building things or fixing things. Of course, they'd still have that job with the certification and without the bachelor's degree.

I wonder what would happen to college costs if the government stopped backing student loans and changed the laws to make them like any other loan; one that can be discharged in bankruptcy. My guess is tuition would be more reasonable since there wouldn't be any way an 18 year old could borrow 100k to pursue an undergrad degree in philosophy or asian womens studies.........
