Yet another poster completely divorced from reality
Millions of women stay home with their kids and do just fine. Perhaps you should focus on the underlying economics and the demographics of Sweden before condemning America. Start with the simple ones:
"Only 3 percent of children(1) in Sweden are born to single mothers. Swedes can afford to be so politically liberal ideologically because they are so socially conservative in their private behavior."
"Only 14% of Swedish children are raised in single-parent families. In the U.S., the number is 37%. Hispanics and Blacks are over 50%. "
Recognize that many Swedes never legally marry but still cohabitate in an arrangement similar to marriage for life. Recognize that Swedish women statistically have children with one man, and contrast that to blacks, Hispanics, and whites in that order.
Your ability to discern fact from fiction needs a little work. Think bigger than the MSN narrative.
Institute a VAT of 25% and the US can be like Sweden.
Sales taxes are included already on the price tag in Sweden and everywhere outside of the US and Canada. Not everything is taxed at 25%. Certain things are cheaper in Sweden as well. New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and most of California have much higher cost of living and property taxes than in Sweden, where are their "things" like in Sweden?
What sort of compensation do they give people without children? Do they just expect them to work 12 months while some others get to only work 9 and get paid the same?

Sweden has a high tax rate and a VAT.
The US does not have a VAT. We are talking about new Federal taxes here, not state taxes.
The Swedish government pays for all that maternity leave.

VAT is basically same as sales tax. Total sales tax (or VAT) in Sweden is 25% for most consumer goods. Sweden has national tax, U.S. has state sales tax, Canada has national (federal) and provincial tax. How about the US government paying also for the maternity leave?
There is no conflict here. What your argument boils down to is men shouldn't be able to take sick leave if they get testicular cancer because women dont.
You've been suckered into the extremists argument. Yes the argument that goes if a woman made $50,000 last year and a man made $70,000 doing the same job its because she was paid unfairly is a bogus argument without taking into consideration the hours worked.
I'm not willing to deny women something because a small minority of people have no problem being dishonest.
My wife (and me also), simply want to see that she gets the same rate for the same pay. We both know that if she takes more time off or works less overtime (my wife doesn't get OT she is on salary) that she isn't going to make ad much at the end of the year and IMO the majority take that position.
I have seen a few (again the minority) that have seemed to think she should get paid less because she is a female and surprisingly they all haven't been males but again, a minority.
My wife saved up her sick days (days everyone gets where she works) and was able to take about 4 1/2 months off.
Testicular cancer is not a choice like pregnancy is. And I believe the woman should be able to take time off for ovarian cancer which is their equivalent. That was a pretty sad argument.

I'll just leave this here for others to determine which is the sad argument.
