Texas governor Greg Abbott has authorized the carrying of firearms by guardsmen on all Texas national guard bases. In light of the recent shooting, I am in hopes other governors will take similar action to prevent more deaths.

The Governors should take national Security Seriously and Obama is running away from his duties. When the WH did not lower the Flag , what a diagrace to our fallen service men and women.

Where was Clinton on this Hiding behind staff members?

Obama and Clinton actually responsible of the results of their National Security Policy. We have a the Shoe Bomber to Ft. Hood and Now.

If this does not paint Obama and Clinton as Failures. Why do even consider Clinton?

Indiana, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma have already done so without all the grandstanding.

Glad someone is taking this issue seriously. It is sad that it isn't the president.

It's good to see common sense breaking out. Lets hope the CinC shows the same level of respect for the lives of the US military as these state governors do for their citizens.

Congress is working on something (which will be included in National Defense Authorization Act) and I think the president will sign it. The current restrictions (enacted in 1992 y Bush Sr, and Dick Cheney) already allow for some flexibility on the issue, and the base commanders could arm security if they thought there was a risk.

Its frustrating that the congress has to do this. The fact is the regulation that has been in place since (as you point out GHWB and DC) allows for arming military members when "personnel or DOD Assets" are at risk.

One order from the president could insure that each location had highly trained seasoned personnel in place and capable to defend our men and women in uniform.

Why do you don't need an order from the president, when the base commanders already have the authority?
