The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists made this statement in Oct. 2012 when another "all-knowing" Republican politician made the same claim.

"Contrary to the inaccurate statements made yesterday by Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL), abortions are necessary in a number of circumstances to save the life of a woman or to preserve her health. Unfortunately, pregnancy is not a risk-free life event, particularly for many women with chronic medical conditions. Despite all of our medical advances, more than 600 women die each year from pregnancy and childbirth-related reasons right here in the US. In fact, many more women would die each year if they did not have access to abortion to protect their health or to save their lives.

"These inaccurate comments are yet another reason why The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ (The College) message to politicians is unequivocal: Get out of our exam rooms."

Conditions that might affect a woman's ability to complete a pregnancy include many types of cancer, sickle cell anemia, high blood pressure, and ectopic pregnancy.

Mr. Walker is no more qualified to judge these matters than he is to judge the quality of silage or livestock competitions at the state fair.

As stated before, though those scenarios are sad, they do account for less than .00003 percent of all pregnancies in the US.

Just for some perspective.

I've read this statement or similar over and over and I'm stuck with the question of what childbirth related reasons would there be separate from pregnancy?

I don't have to have "credentials" for that statement to be true. But don't take my word for it. Here are a few sources that verify my position:

According to the Preeclampsia Foundation:

Eclampsia: 5 things you need to know - CNN.com

By the way, abortion is not required or even recommended as any sort of "treatment" for sepsis during pregnancy. Abortion or delivery of the baby had absolutely no impact on the outcome of sepsis during pregnancy. The treatment is basically antibiotics, low-dose steroids, glucose control and ventilation goals.

How about the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists? I give them more credibility than Walker or your misinformed post.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists issued a statement saying: "Abortions are necessary in a number of circumstances to save the life of a woman or to preserve her health. Unfortunately, pregnancy is not a risk-free life event."

Conditions that might lead to ending a pregnancy to save a woman's life include severe infections, heart failure and severe cases of preeclampsia, a condition in which a woman develops very high blood pressure and is at risk for stroke, says Erika Levi, a obstetrician and gynecologist at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

"There are certain cases where ending the pregnancy is the only option, cases where it would be putting the mother's life at risk to continue the pregnancy," she says.

Where did you get that statistic?

You're deflecting. And also backpeddling.

Duly noted.
