Here we go again, instead of the markets being allowed to run their natural course, we have politicians trying to play God.

No one wants a recession, but, every market has its peaks and valleys. Remember the crash of 1987, that was followed by one of the biggest run ups in history. Who is to say a recession now would not be a great buying opportunity?

Four weeks ago the Democrats were complaining that Bush has spent us into bankruptcy with the war in Iraq. Now all of a sudden we can come up with $150 billion to spark the economy? Where is this money going to come from? I thought we were broke?

Wake up America. Politicians are spending your money in order to get themselves elected. Doesn't everyone see the hypocrisy of this

NO! The money coming back is going to people that paid the taxes into the system. Its being returned to the owners.

Welfare is when the government acts in a socialistic capacity and takes the tax money from those that earned it and give it to those that did not earn it.

I think a thread on the pros/cons of a stimulus package is valid, but I in no way consider it a "welfare program" if its going to the taxpayers.

I disagree. We are currently in a deficit and in debt up to our eyeballs. Any further spending increases our deficit and our debt, which passes this spending on to our children with interest.

If the welfare check were sent to people who only paid income taxes and were matched with equal valued spending cuts, it would at least be a wash. But instead we continue spending as planned AND increase our debt.

No thanks.

Also... not everyone will be eligible for a check... while people who have not paid income taxes will. That's wealth redistribution.

I plan to send mine to a certain Presidential campaign. As soon as the bill is signed, I'm prepared to front the expense using my credit card and pay it off with the stimulus check. That's the American way.

I was torn between donating it directly to pay off the debt, or sending it to the presidential candidate of my choice. But then I found out that I don't qualify for a check, so the government is helping me not make that choice yet again.

i just heard on NPR that some economists are saying that now we are not in a recession as previously thought. the commerce dept's durable goods report had an INCREASE of 5.2% in dec.
but you know that everytime you put "money" into a politician's hand, he's going to find some way to spend it. sen baucus of montana even alluded to "cuts" that would be made in other places in order to borrow the money. then he backed off of that when the interviewer asked him about the recipient receiving the money, but then paying for it somewhere else due to a benefit cut in the future.

even more infuriating is that i heard several politicians and media refer to it as a "rebate". it cannot be a rebate to those who have paid NO income taxes. take some responsibility america, stop borrowing $$ that we don't have.

it is NOT going solely to taxpayers. many of the recipients are those who pay little or NO income taxes and are due to get back more than what they paid in. THAT is welfare. it is wrong to disqualify those who make over $75k simply because the congress finds them to be "too rich". where is their justice? they CERTAINLY paid taxes, but are not sharing in these welfare checks that politicians are using to buy votes from the public.
