The union is in a really hard place trying to thread the needle to satisfy both tiers and the focus on the healthcare thing which is about what they want more-so than the workers themselves makes it all the harder. I don't know enough to have much of an opinion myself but find it interesting. How does this impact the negotiations with Ford & GM later -- is it pretty much that whatever the first company to make a deal signs to becomes standard?

The USG is not going to rescue the UAW again when the company goes bankrupt.

The UAW says it's about safety and security of their workers.

Other articles that interviewed the workers though said it was about money.

Starting salaries going from $17/hour to $25/hour
Every worker gets a $3000 bonus.
Two 3% raises for workers hired before 2007.

And the workers said "No, not good enough".

Just to clarify, from the Freep link:

"Entry-level workers in assembly plants would see wages increase to a range of $17 to $25.35 per hour"

HappyTexan's phrasing lead me to believe that the proposed contract had the wage of a new hire was going from $17 to $25 per hour -- it's not.

Seems like workers are pricing themselves out of a job.

This time around, there seems to be a general (and massive) disconnect from the shop floor to the IUAW (International).

FCA put out a memo saying it was "disappointed" in the young workforce. (people hired after the bankruptcy/Two-tiers)
It's almost to say FCA(and maybe IUAW) were relying on the younger workforce to pass through a bad contract, with the divide-and-conquer strategy in place.

The problem is the incessant accommodation for management and contracts are basically synonymous with concessions. On top of that, the International UAW seems to be complicit.
