I don't know if everyone knows, as I did not, but there are still locked mental health facilities in the united states.

And lots of them!

If you commit a crime, you might go to jail for 6 months, get out, and life resumes.

But if you get sent to a hospital instead of a jail, as in the cop thinks you MIGHT commit a crime, and you haven't committed one, the doctors get to experiment on you until they think they've cured you of your "disease"!

Regardless of if you want their "help" or not!

In some ways it's worse than being sent to prison or jail, because there's so much discretion at the hands of this normal dude who happens to be a psychiatrist, on whether you get out or not.

And if the very small mental health facility freaks you out, the longer you stay!
And if the meds freak you out, you stay even longer! Because now they are observing "stress"!

And if the staff is abusive, there's nobody to call, because you can't call the police from inside those locked facilities. You become 100% dependent on the staff at the facility. There's no internet to research what drugs they are giving you, and the phone calls are all in public places where the staff can hear!

You can call a relative, if you remember their phone number.

But report away, because if you don't kiss ass, you stay longer!

Supposedly there's a lot of power over the patients once you are admitted. You cannot leave until a "doctor" says you can leave. And patients complain of rape at some facilities, of mass sexual harassment at others, it's just a horrible mixture of elements.

Ok. Thanks for the heads up. I will try and not commit a crime and then act like a lunatic to the point where I am classified as insane and then placed in a mental hospital.

Oklahoma has one of those type places. Mental health doctors there attempt to restore your sanity so you can be put on trial for your crime: EXCLUSIVE: Inside the Oklahoma hospital for the insane | KFOR.com

As a former employee in "one of these places," THERE IS A REASON THEY ARE "LOCKED!"

I'm sure those places do some good.

Especially the professional ones.

There is also a lot of room for BS, I think.

Of course there are! There are plenty of mentally ill folks who are NOT in prison, but who are "locked up", for their own safety, in most cases. Sometimes....most times, it's for their own good. They will be treated and many will improve enough to be in a freer state.

You mean...one of those places the Oregon shooter should have been in before he slaughtered innocent people? One of those places?

I know quite a bit about the one in Vinita. It's very nice. Most of the people are there because they are trying to stabilize them on some medicine, and mental hospitals won't keep someone long enough to do that, so,if you get a court order, they can send them there, and they can keep them long enough to stabilize them. I've never heard of any hardened criminals there, or anyone who has been there for life.

Mental hospitals don't even have to admit a person if you take them there, and they are stark raving mad. Because they don't have enough beds, and they try to keep them open for emergency court orders. If you ever take someone to one, they'll ask if they are a threat to themselves or someone else, always say yes to be sure they take them. If they have a mental illness they could hurt themselves or someone else, so it's not like you aren't telling the truth.

I worked on one of those units for about 5 years in high school and college. cb at sea states it very well.

Sorry OP, but having worked at many inpatient psych units and state psych hospitals and prisons, the only accurate things in your paranoid post is your first and last paragraph.

What really shocks me is that people don't know that such places exist. Where else to you think people who are constantly suicidal and/or hearing voices to kill people are places to ensure safety of self and others and to get treatment??

Some units are even in general hospitals. You might have knee operating in a hospital unit adjacent to the hospital psych ward and no even know it.

The psychiatric discharges you when you have recovered enough to no longer be at risk to self or others. Same as any other specialist (neurosurgeon, cardiologist, etc.)

The REAL PROBLEM, as was mentioned above, is that we actually NEED MORE of these places! No one fully recovers in 3-5 days yet they are forced out because that is all the insurance will usually pay for.
