The law exists as an excuse to stop drivers and levy a tax upon them if found in violation.

The victims are the people paying the medical costs for people too stupid the wear a seatbelt. If we refused to treat anyone who wasn't privately paying I wouldn't have a problem with anyone driving unrestrained.

I admit that I do not wear seatbelts when driving "around town". But if I am on the open road, and always if I am on an expressway, that seatbelt is buckled.

Truth be told, half the people who rant about you shouldn't have to wear seat belts are old farts with big bellies.

Then there are the victims who are fined for not wearing a belt. What does the govt do with all that money?

We should seek ways for individuals to be responsible for their own habits and behaviours, not collectivize them and then pass ineffective laws that only serve to make people poorer and the government richer.

Nope I didn't say that did I? but some times we have to protect people who are too stupid to protect themselves.

We just need to protect stupid people, it's just that simple and it's not a big deal unless someone wants it to be.

YES, seatbelts make a LOT of sense.

Driving on public roadways is a right, that comes with certain standards, rules and regulations that you have to comply with.

In a perfect world everyone would be responsible for his own actions. But the world isn't perfect.

Sounds like your perfect world is tickets and fines for made up infractions.

Not at all. As a libertarian on many issues the seatbelt laws bother me. As a pragmatic I realize the laws save me money. I'm a big taxpayer.

I hear about the safety issue with seat belts, but then we allow much riskier behavior to go without punishment.

Ex. Smoking. Skydiving. Base Jumping. Eating bad food. Etc.

With other risky behaviors its simply accounted for in your insurance.
