Paul Ryan is the guy who drafted the fiscally responsible budget that lowered taxes on the rich, slashed social programs and claimed it was revenue neutral. Upon investigation, it only was revenue neutral by making absurd assumptions. It really ballooned the deficit -- surprise.
Ryan has been successful being a huckster who comes off as reasonable and serious, even a wonk. If he became Speaker, he would have to choose between being the Speaker the crazy right wants -- and in that case, show his true alliance with the Ayn Rand sympathizers, or the center, and then be in the same position John Boehner was.
It actually doesn't matter who becomes the Speaker of the House, because the issue is not Paul Ryan, or any other candidate; it's the hard-core rejectionist wing of the GOP who view any little departure from their agenda as heresy. Any Speaker is going to have a rough time of it from these refuseniks, who have made the House ungovernable. And unintentionally giving Nancy Pelosi an unusual amount of leverage for the minority party.

It doesent matter who we nominate, he/she is going to face endless attacks and obstruction from the Suicide Caucus of 40 or so bigots, kooks, conspiracy theorists, nativists, Bible thumpers, and all around wackos. Nothing is going to change until one of three things happen: either the "Hastert rule" is completely scrapped, the wingnuts are expelled from the GOP, or the Democrats retake the House. Until then it's endless gridlock.
Well, here's another Republican who can trace his roots back to the first stirrings of libertarianism (please note the lower-case, rather than capital 'l'), but has evolved into a pragmatist:
Or perhaps, as some of us who met him back in the late Sixties failed to recognize at the time, he was already operating from a solid grounding in realpolitik.
It seems like the whole party wants him to run to replace John Boehner. Establishment and anti-establishment Republicans alike are warming up to the idea of him succeeding Boehner.
In terms of what a House Speaker is supposed to do, this is a big part of the poll, would Paul Ryan make a good Speaker? Keep in mind, a Speaker is not meant to be partisan. They are free to champion their own causes, but they are not there to shut down debate or keep bills from coming onto the floor (which is where John Boehner has failed).
Check Nancy Pelosi's record on Republican Bills getting to the House Floor or Harry Reid's record.
Paul Ryan would make a very good Speaker, but I hope he turns the job down.
He is a Policy Wonk and a very good one. We have few Economists in the Congress and few who actually know where the money is spent and how it's spent. Ryan has a more important job to do - Reform our Out-of-Control Tax Code.
There is NO Speaker that will satisfy the Hostage Takers - they appear to think that when the House passes a bill that the Media will support them, the entire Senate will support them and the President will roll over and play dead. They have no concept of Reality and so they are now allies of the Leftists in shutting the Government down and blaming the GOP.
Fine bunch of Folks. They are like The Obama - My Way or the Highway, but fail to understand that The Obama gets away with that MYOTH because the Leftist Media is in his corner.
Paul Ryan needs to turn down this job. Let Jim Jordan or one of the other Hostage Takers step up to the plate and try the Heat in the Kitchen ...... AND the 200 days a year they will have to spend doing Fund Raising to elect more Hostage Taker CongressCritters to by Newby CongressCritters and try to find the House Men's Room.

Given the current crop of people in the running, sure, let's have him.
He has horrible ideas that would be utter failures if actually implemented, but he's notably less crazy than the loudest members of the fringe and seems like the sort of person who'd settle for half of what he wants instead of throwing a tantrum like a child and trying to shut down the government if he doesn't get everything he'd like.

it was the gang of 47 now just 45-- (2 defected this past week), who needs to be corralled into order- Who is the man/woman who can do that - well I submit the Lone Ranger! Batman? Wonderwoman OR !
He doesn't even want to be speaker. He's happy where he is. And who could blame him. Who wants to deal with the tea party who would hurt us all by closing down the government until they got their way.
No, Ryan is bad on immigration (open borders and amnesty), plus conservatives don't really like him (Boehner hack).
Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee is said to be considering running for Speaker. She would be my first choice.
Blackburn certainly is descriptive of your name. Why am I not surprised?
