Everyone always says that the poor get free this and free that, discount housing, free phones, free medical care..
My question... Where?
I was just poking around the HUD housing website looking for information for home improvement grants and low interest loans. I have been told these products exist. So I think it can't hurt to look.
Well I stumble upon links for low income housing at local and state levels, including section 8 housing and grants. Every single one of them says they are currently closed to funding. My county handles 1200 section 8 certificates. That is really not a lot when you consider how many really low income families exist. Of course it says there is a wait list and they are not adding new applicants.
What good are all these programs if they are not being funded?
We are unable to help our own citizens because of the immigration laws not being enforced. There isn't enough to go around anymore. Add to this the fact that so many jobs have been exported overseas which has increased the number of our citizens needing assistance.
With any luck, we'll take care of both problems with the next election and every person in the US able to work will be working. Public assistance was never meant to be a way of life for the able-bodied.
War on poverty has not done a single thing to get anyone off the dole. It has helped place many more people on the dole. If you like staying poor keep voting for people like Obama, Hillary, Bernie Sanders.
I know you're a great kidder, but this one takes the prize..Yes I remember the US under Bush and Reagan, no poverty, none...An absolute miracle I tell ya...Have another glass of Kool Aid?
Because the people who monopolize the public welfare system are no longer those temporarily down on their luck and working hard to turn it around while getting a little assistance - it's monopolized by people exploiting the system and using it as multi-generational ways of life.
Wait......This is the same OP that starts all the threads in the relationships forums....
She's already on public aid, owns properties & brags on how she affords all kinds of lavish extras.......
She's not "poor"
But damn good at faking it.
I don't get food stamps any longer. I do own properties, but you can own property and collect assistance. I am poor based on my income.

I'm not in total disagreement here, but the machine age has finally come to maturity and we as Americans are still stuck in the hero worship of guys who play football. What happened that we have become so blind to the current reality, the old argument of new technology bringing with it new jobs isn't panning out as the true believers thought it would. In the book, The End Of Work, Jeremy Rifkin nailed it:
"We are entering a new age of global markets and automated production. The road to a near-workerless economy is within sight. Whether that road leads to a safe haven or a terrible abyss will depend on how well civilization prepares for the post-market era that will follow on the heels of the Third Industrial Revolution. The end of work could spell a death sentence for civilization as we have come to know it. The end of work could also signal the beginning of a great social transformation, a rebirth of the human spirit. The future lies in our hands."
He prefaced his thoughts by stating the obvious with regard to time lines and a society in decline, time is all it takes and we've been at this for awhile. I know I'm seeing more of the homeless, I'm seeing more bad to ponder over, than good to celebrate. Yes there is a ton of people who are receiving the benefits of this system, and that's all good but when the winners proceed to bury the losers in a barrage of insult and admonishment we should know what that is, and we should speak up for those who are failing in our society. This third industrial revolution isn't the one of our grandfathers time
And we need to ask if there isn't a bit of a question here, who is' failing who? We know we have terrible schools, over populated prisons, racial and social strife, haves and have-nots, a class structured society in spite of all the protestations to the contrary, a demonstrated hatred for many of ones fellow citizens, this isn't a rant it's simply the truth and we don't like hearing it but it's there for all to see. Machines are taking jobs in Mexico, SE Asia, China, and right here in the o'l USof A. The facts of globalization are on our doorstep, it's what we'll make of it from here that will count, I guess.

I am a firm believer that in order to collect benefits, you should be working full time, or physically unable to work. Many folks like myself, are still very low income even after working 40-50 hours a week. They should be able to get assistance to cover their shortfalls.
Yes unfortunately. Want to buy one? I have been unsuccessful in selling it in the past. Just because someone owns houses does not mean they have money. I have debt in the form of large mortgages. You are welcome to take them over. Sure would relieve a lot of my stress.
