You still can travel with a firearm. It has to be unloaded, no ammunition. Has to be in a locked case and checked in as baggage. Check with the airlines as the laws may have changed over the last 5 years, but 5 years ago, you could. I can remember all the things you are talking about and yes, that is all true.

Before the 1968 firearms act you could do so. The 1968 FA was actually a reaction to the Kennedy assasination, as the gun used was a Carcano from a catalog. Although I'm pretty sure Oswald wouldhave passed a background check.

I do believe we need federal gun laws to get rid of the intentionally lax and full of loopholes county and states laws. However, the best gun control is to end the war on drugs.

I hate to tell you this, but state and county gun laws do not supersede federal gun laws. There are no real "loopholes".

I hate to tell you this, but you are wrong. Where do you think the guns are coming from in the city of Chicago? The city where they enacted stricter gun laws or neighboring counties and states where gun laws are more lax?

Those states still have to follow federal gun laws and do. Because Chicago has strict gun laws has nothing to do with the laws of other jurisdictions, other than federal law. All states are held to federal standards.

Hypothetically, if federal laws were uniformly as strict as the city of Chicago's, how would the sheer raw numbers of fire arms enter Chicago?

Some of Chicago's gun laws were ruled unconstitutional.
