Having been in many forums like this one and many discussions with people in general, ever since high school, I have come to develop a theory that people "cement" their opinions and beliefs about politics, religion and such while they are in their 20s. After that, no matter the facts or truth, people for the most part do not change their minds about those fundamental beliefs. A result of what I call my "Cement Theory" that so far has proven quite sound all considered for a long time now, again by way of these threads. Which begs the question, why do we debate? Who has changed their mind? Why bother? Is time spent pounding sand not time better spent?

You are still young Grasshopper!
Social-Progressive is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy.
It takes some time in the real world to come to that realization.

My political views have changed drastically since I got older and wiser to the corruption in political views.
It all depends if you want to follow, or you want to find the truth.
Young people, right off the teet, and just kicked from the nest are looking to follow. They don't have time for the truth, yet.
Once real life slaps them in the face, they may start looking to find the truth, as the lies keep adding up and "I told you so" is not a pleasant thing to hear constantly.

The nail in the coffin for anything socialist-progressive, ended when I became self-employed. That included both political parties at the time.

Today, there is actually some Constitutionalist holding office. Lobbyists no longer attempt to knock on their doors. They know it will not be answered.

Show me a young Constitutionalist and I'll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old Socialist-Progressive and I'll show you someone with no brains.

Government has taught the people to raise passive victims, so that can come in and save the day, taking choices and then the ability to make those choice from us, and they make the call.

Forums like this only serve to further 'cement' people into their idealogical corners.

As does Facebook - per studies done.

A place where thoughtful, intelligent debate took place - without the name calling and extreme positions is going to be the place where minds could be changed.

It is not here and will never be here.

I think it's a mix of critical thinking ability and ego.

Identifying with your views creates emotional barriers to change, and it's much harder to admit when your idea is wrong. The older you get without learning how to think objectively and put your ego aside, the more entrenched your views are.

People need to value finding the correct answer, even if it doesn't fit their current views, more than they value "winning" the argument.

I could not disagree more, but I asked the question, why bother?

Whether your brain was cemented early or late in life, I can just tell, there is no reason to bother here...

I agree. Critical thinking, true objective critical thinking, is a rare thing to encounter, certainly very rare in these threads. The ability to recognize sound reason vs all the other sounds is critical as well. Also true is that ego too often gets the better of us and confirmation bias always serves to undermine our ability to know truth, more and more so over more and more years.

unless you're like me

where you were raised as a free-market libertarian Republican.

but then as soon as you hit the 'real world', these so-called "Self-Regulating Financial institutions" suddenly collapse -- and you get to watch Congress and the Fed dole out trillions of dollars to the banks and asset owners to prevent them from losing money. It became pretty obvious Republicans didn't seem to care much about "letting the markets work", they were worried about their political donors losing money. Maintaining the status quo and protecting the financial interests of the wealthy was their #1 priority.

so now I'm center-left with strong socialist tendencies, and I probably will be for the rest of my life. The GOP had their chance to live up to their ideology of "free markets", and they failed completely.

I disagree, I find myself becoming more and more centrist as I go through my 20s. Five years ago I would have been a full blown "Trumplet" frothing at the mouth about Muslims and Mexicans. I recently left the Republican Party because I can't stand the endless paranoia, bigotry, and ignorance regarding my fellow Americans. I changed my voter affiliation to no party. I am an independent conservative now.

I fully see the day where I could, keyword COULD, potentially vote for a conservative Democrat.
