I already stated they purchased them legally, they altered them to fire in the fully automatic mode and accept large capacity magazines and the clips could be detached easily.

There are things that you, or other people, may do that are perfectly legal but may not be things that you want to be public. You may be cheating on your wife, may visit bondage clubs, etc., that are legal but you may not want others to know about.
