I think it is funny all the anti gun people want gun owners to be super trained and qualified to use said guns then get all shocked and appalled when they hear someone has a few thousands of rounds of ammo when that is what someone will use in a few months to stay trained and qualified.
Not even to mention the people who play shooting sports like uspsa or three gun and a happy practice. I know some people who use 5k rounds a month without much hassle.
Not to mention how much cheaper ammo is on line in bulk. Often I can buy in bulk on line at 30-40% less than buying local at gun shops or big5.
Maybe two shoe boxes from someone with big feet for 1,000 rounds..
Does not change one iota that these two were carrying a lot of ammo for not going to the range.
Also from my Range Master experience it is not the norm to go through that many rounds in a session.
Yes it happens but it is not the norm.
Wrong on both counts. Slightly smaller than a shoebox, and 3 three or four hundred rounds is easy on a range day. If you actually are a range officer you should know that.
Just a quick PSA for those who are shocked by the notion of a thousand rounds of ammunition, and picturing a room full of mortar shells stacked to the ceiling:
A thousand AR15 or AK47 rounds is roughly the size of a small shoe box. It may sound like a lot, but it isn't. In a typical range outing, you might burn through three to four hundred in an hour or two. 1k rounds is at best four decent range trips.
When you hear "omg! 8k rounds of ammo!! Teh stockpiles!!", please let an accurate mental picture form - which would be eight smallish shoe boxes.
Picture four shoe boxes, and four stacked on top of that. That's it. It barely takes up any room in a small closet, let alone justify the hysteria around "a stockpile" of ammo.
Thank you.
Sigh, 1000 rounds is the least that you buy when you purchase a new gun. Have these people NEVER been to a firing range?
A cache of 1000 rounds of shotgun shells won't fit in a shoe box, but I have way more than 1000 in just 12 gauge goose loads. That's not counting the duck loads and the lead shotshells for other game (quail/pheasants, rabbits, squirrel). Then you get into the 16, 20 and .410 loads.

Media watches too many old cowboy movies where six rounds were all you'd ever need.
If you reload for centerfire rounds the stacks of powder, bullets, brass, primers are many and varried for each gun and caliber.
The manufactures would do well to offer sample bullet weights/construction and powder in smal batches for testing, otherwise you accumulate a can of powder you don't need or a hundred bullets that are going to collect dust. Talking accuracy guys vs powder burners.
Interesting they found pellets the guy claimed on a dating website he used for target practice, but no one mentioned finding any air guns. then that whole house tour was very, very, very wierd.
Not to mention it is important to buy and stock up on ammo when it is cheap and plentiful, like it has been for the last 6 months and unlike what it will be for the next year after Obama's speech tonight and Hillary pushing gun control all of 2016.
picture 1.4 billion rounds... that was the dhs order for domestic use.
So wait, on this thread we have heard that 5000 a month for the range is reasonable. At that rate, 1.5 billion is enough for 25000 officers for a year. That barely covers half of Customs and Border Protection, let alone the rest of the agencies. So is it really a lot, or is this yet another fabricated conspiracy?
