Criminals sent away by undercover officers, then getting out and coming back to wreak vengeance on their apprehenders? That's the stuff of Hollywood - it probably happens in real life somewhere, but not near as often as in the minds of screenwriters. And, sadly, the fervent imaginations of people determined to 'protect' themselves.
Now, people blowing away family members by accident? That's not at all rare. No, that's just another week here in Shoot-First-And-Ask-Questions-Later land.
I know this - I'd rather risk dealing with someone I can't identify in the darkness than risk killing one of my own children. But, hey, that's just me. .
Incidentally,there are thousands of car accidents every day, (and people are killed) however, I don't see anyone giving up their cars because of it.

I feel very sorry for the daughter being shot and dying. I hope the gun owner is enjoying her right to own and use guns. She probably continue enjoying that right for the rest of her life.
America's love affair with guns is the weirdest, most disturbing thing about that country.
Thinking it is a "love affair" is a bit disturbing, TroutDude.
Some just feel strongly about their 2nd amendment rights.
Not really so sure that should be seen as weird.
It's a basic human right.

EDITED TO ADD: This is my last post on this thread. This was a horrible and very sad tragedy. I wish I hadn't responded to the OP's bait. If anyone wants to continue the conversation in another thread, fine. But I personally don't want to continue in this thread. This thread is about this tragedy. Not gun-control/gun rights.
