Olympic and tourism officials in Brazil downplayed risks for foreign visitors from the mosquito-borne Zika virus on Monday, even as the health ministry warned pregnant women to consult doctors before visiting the country amid a widening scare.

Alarm over the virus, linked to a rising number of mental birth defects among children of mothers infected by it, comes two weeks before nationwide Carnival celebrations, a highlight of Brazil's tourism calendar.

It also comes 200 days before Rio de Janeiro hosts the opening ceremonies of the 2016 Olympics, the first in South America.

Following a warning by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week that pregnant women should not travel to 14 countries and territories in the Caribbean and Latin America where the virus has spread, Brazil's health ministry said pregnant women should seek medical advice before visiting.

Brazil said it has recorded at least 3,530 cases of microcephaly and 46 deaths since the increasing number of cases was recognized last October. The country saw fewer than 200 cases of microcephaly annually over the previous five years.

How hard would it be to wipe out the mosquito? I mean if the world really, really tried, made a concerted effort to drive the mosquito extinct, how hard would it be?

We wipe animals out by accident all the time. And if we tried? If we hunted them down? Oh man. It'd be awesome.

it would probably be smarter to use gene drives to push engineered resistance through the population, rather than just exterminate them entirely. and I say that as someone that suffers hundreds of pesky skeeter bites every summer

US scientists have urged the World Health Organisation to take urgent action over the Zika virus, which they say has "explosive pandemic potential".

Writing in a US medical journal, they called on the WHO to heed lessons from the Ebola outbreak and convene an emergency committee of disease experts.

They said a vaccine might be ready for testing in two years but it could be a decade before it is publicly available.

Zika, linked to shrunken brains in children, has caused panic in Brazil.

Thousands of people have been infected there and it has spread to some 20 countries.

Now the rowers and triathletes have something other than raw sewage to worry about.
On the bright side, exposure means a lifetime immunity. Just don't be a female if child bearing age.

Perfect opportunity for the Obama administration to import more non-citizens, then chide us for dare being concerned, hoping to score some political points against his "enemies."
