"believers in god", often described as predominately creationist and deistic[3]), and 1.5% as non-religious.

A very small percentage of German soldiers had any clue of what the Nazi's were up to. The vast majority were just doing their military duty just like our soldier were.
The SS, not even all of them had any idea of what they were getting into when they joined. To them it was an elite unit, like our Rangers or Paratroopers. And it paid more, a big motivation for young men.
Another fact that many people do not know, much of the German Army were veterans of before the Nazi's came to power. The excellent NCO's they had, most of them were "12 pointers" which were men who signed up for a 12 year hitch in the late 20's. There were no jobs in Germany because of the disastrous Treaty of Versailles. In the Army they would have a paycheck, a place to live and 3 meals a day but they had to sign on for 12 years. So these guys had no choice when the Nazi's came to power and of course their enlistment was extended in 1939 without option.
So yes, the Nazi's were very evil people, but 90% of the German Army was not, they were men doing their duty. They fought for their families, their villages and their country in that order and honor above all else.
The new thing in Hollywood these days is making every German appear evil who wore a uniform. It's disgusting really.
