A sad fact is, if they didn't have a gun, they would have found another way to kill themselves...

Many people blame guns for suicides but once again, it's the disturbed person who performs the act.

The gun nuts do not want to talk about gun suicides. The topic scares them, because the number are so much larger than gun homicides and the statistics support the proposition that fewer guns in the home leads to lower suicide rates. States with strict gun control have lower suicide rates.

That is sad..........that a person can become so despondent as to do this.
25 years working the street I saw hundreds of suicides and many that I still suspect might have been.
hangings, wrist slicing, overdose, shooting, jumping, stepping into path of car, self immolation's............Yes guns were the predominate method but the others were just as gruesome and just a final.
And I saw more than one guy commit suicide in the Nam to.

Totally unsupportable assertion.

rlc - the gun did not pull its own trigger. The individual pulled the trigger and is responsible for what he did. Even if it was self homocide.

Once again, it's so easy to blame an inanimate object instead of the person behind it.

While that's true there are some other factors involved.
  • Suicide is most frequently an emotional impulsive decision
  • Suicidal tendencies are treatable. There's a pretty high "recovery rate" for attempted suicide victims -- i. e. once saved they don't repeat
  • Relatively few suicide attempts actually result in death, except for gun suicide attempts
If you string those three thing together you see the cause. If you look at the statistics -- the states with the laxest gun laws and most guns have the highest suicide rates. Now you can generate two hypotheses from that data. Easy access to guns leads to more successful suicides OR people who own guns are more unstable and prone to suicide. Which is it?

Saying that someone who is despondent and suicidal will kill themselves anyway gun or no gun is equivalent to me saying if you don't have a gun you'll find some other means of self protection.

The fact that someone who is despondent "may" use a gun to commit suicide is insufficient reason to support a banning of guns.

As far as I am concerned not having a gun when you need to defend yourself is a form of suicide.

What about concealed carry at Sam's Club? I assume this is legal?
How do y'all feel about a needing a gun for a routine shopping errand? It just seems sort of bizarre to me, like 19th century Deadwood or something.
