Beyond a stupid question. There are far more good cops out there than bad, and situations like Dallas make the problem inevitably worse.

You mean once the land barons and businesses like railroads and mineral companies needed security and the little "troublemakers" dealt with?

Unfortunately law enforcement has been used throughout history as a strong-arm of monopolized corporate/banking interest, often crushing labor protests and killing unions and their organizers.

The Military and Police have been used and abused throughout history to protect the profits of very few people-and I wish masses of them would stand up and realize they have more in common with the movements and people they are made to crush/kill.

It reminds me of a cartoon I once saw with two bankers walking by a wall of Police stopping protestors and one says to the other "I just hope we can keep this going once they find out we are plundering their pensions".

The kind of security you are writing about was largely handled by private firms like Pinkerton. From what I gathered from earlier posts, this was the kind of security you were advocating for?

And as for the corruption of the police, I do agree with you that the history of policing in America is a history of rampant corruption. I do think that with more and better training (a required bachelor's degree with a minor in sociology, to start) the modern American police force can overcome a lot of its current racism and brutality.

Then it turned into Pinkertons paid for by the public yet still working for the elite while having greater powers.

They eat up enormous resources. Since they are staffed by people, they will be continually a source of either tragic mistakes, corruption, racism and bullying.
Your view is wrong and there are many fine Police Departments and agencies that work 24 / 7. You may not see them actually go into a pitch gun battle, but they neutralize many situation before they turn bad.

The Law is a thankless job and we should be glad Men and Women volunteer for this job. The problem is criminals think they are above the law.

Funny isn't it? The slave masters of the American population make their slaves pay for their own shackles...they are a shrewd bunch for sure Look at all of our restrictions on freedom imposed upon us by the "government", they are all "laws" made to make the slaves fend for themselves with whatever their owners have left on the ground for them. Having the slaves enslave themselves for the benefit of the Plantation Owners "legally" and "democratically"...how truly genius it is.

Or just pay them more, and have non-commissioned hiring staff.
When you have starting pay under $30k (very common in Missouri and I suspect in a lot of other departments not on the coasts), no one with a four year degree is going to apply.

Whereas if you have starting pay upwards of $70k, you will have a far better educated and better quality of candidate coming in.
