Q Thank you very much. Appreciate it, Josh. On Sunday, we learned that the United States made a payment to the government of Iran of $1.7 billion. Was this tied to the deal that led to the freedom of the Americans that were being held in Iran?

MR. EARNEST: Jon, this is actually the result of a long-running claims process that had been at The Hague. In 1979, there was obviously an Iranian revolution that abruptly severed relations between our two countries. And prior to that revolution, the U.S. government had entered into an agreement with the then-Iranian government to transfer about $400 million in military equipment to the Iranian government. Once the revolution took place, obviously that equipment was not transferred, but we also didn’t return Iran’s money either. So that money essentially was held in what could, I think — essentially in an escrow account. And for more than 30 years now, the Iranians have been using this claims process at The Hague to try to recover that $400 million.

So, the story going around is correct, $400 Million dollars was transferred to Iran.

Just a coincidence the hostages were released at that exact same time.

Guess you still have to try and spin the motivation when the basic elements of the story follow what other's have already said, but it puts the regime in a bad light.
Especially since the world court has no real authority over sovereign nation, so compliance is voluntary, and since we've held those funds since the 1970's, why the sudden urge to pay off the terrorist mullahs??

OK... Carter, Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton, and Bush 43 did not pay this out... probably because it is illegal for the U.S. to conduct a monetary transaction with Iran in American dollars.

Obama touched on the subject of the settlement during a Cabinet Room statement that January weekend when the Americans were freed.

"The United States and Iran are now settling a longstanding Iranian government claim against the United States government," Obama said, adding, "For the United States, this settlement could save us billions of dollars that could have been pursued by Iran. So there was no benefit to the United States in dragging this out. With the nuclear deal done, prisoners released, the time was right to resolve this dispute as well."

According to the underlined portion above... when was the right time to resolve this dispute?

Yeah - that's what I thought.

The fact checker sucks. I found this in two minutes.

AND Obama is breaking the law by giving Iran money - unless there is some hidden loophole in play.

Obama admin denies $400M payment to Iran was ransom for hostages

At the time, a top Iranian military commander said the payment was indeed ransom. Iranian Basij Commander Brig Gen Mohammed Reza Naqdi said it showed “that the U.S. doesn’t understand anything but the language of force.”

“This money was returned for the freedom of the U.S. spy and it was not related to the [nuclear] negotiations,” he said, according to state-controlled Fars News Agency.
