If people want a third party to be viable - it starts today.

It also means getting into Congress first - mainly the House. Forget the presidency for awhile. You have to prove you can make it locally before wanting a nationwide vote to be successful. Start in locales where your message would resonate. And you need more than one member in order to be considered relevant.

There has to be a plan. It will not work when you basically show up out of nowhere (figuratively) to run for president. Gravitas has to be built up over time.

Most states have hurdles that make it extremely difficult to even get a candidate on the ballot. Then they need a certain percentage of votes to get public funding and compete. The two parties currently control all the money and the districts. I would love to see another party, but we already have two fairly successful third parties (the Green Party and the Libertarian Party) and they rarely win local elections, and never presidential elections.

I don't think Libertarians want to be in Congress. A few days ago the Libertarian Chapter in my State was making reference to the elections for Governor. Saying sure can win State positions, but still be the minor Party. If we focus on the Governor race will still be the Minor Party. If we win the position of Governor will still be the Minor Party.

Think only way Third Parties can grow is if factions form within the 2 Major Parties then break away forming their own Parties.

I want to know how you get to be a major party overnight? How does that work?

It needs to start independently, and as it grows and people see that you are handling things as a real organization - growth will result - if that's what the people want.

The people in the main parties are not going to break away from the goodies they get - in order to start from scratch.

You won't get something "overnight." If you want something, you actually have to build it. But, you could look at dissenters from the two major parties (the Bernie democrats and Trump republicans) and try to pick off as many of them as possible.

That would be a hope, but I don't think you have that as a goal from the start.

yep. these people that run third party for president with no base are just shooting themselves in the foot. they dispirit those that would support them

A third party can be viable if the people pushing will start by winning local elections and start taking seats in state houses, then get members of the House and then building to state wide offices Gov/Senators.

then with a solid base (and only then) run a candidate for president.

if they do this, it can work.
