So far this is shaping up to be the most conservative cabinet since Reagan, says Politico.

Trump's 'Dream Team' Cabinet Most Conservative Since Reagan

Donald Trump’s education secretary nominee is a huge critic of public schools and has pushed to steer taxpayer dollars to charter schools and voucher programs. His Health and Human Services pick wants to dismantle Obamacare and privatize Medicare. His attorney general nominee would crack down on "sanctuary cities" and increase deportations of undocumented immigrants. And his choice to run the CIA believes shutting down “black site” prisons was a mistake, while his national security adviser contends Islam is a threat to Western civilization.

Indeed, even his so-called establishment pick for transportation secretary, Elaine Chao, has conservative credentials from her time advising the Heritage Foundation and her eight-year tenure at the Labor Department, where admirers and critics say she took a very pro-business approach.

Add them all up, and the president-elect is well on his way to building a conservative dream team that has Republicans cheering and liberals in despair. “It’s the most conservative [Cabinet] since Reagan,” said David McIntosh, president of the Club for Growth. “But I don’t think he’s using an ideological lens to pick people. I think he’s genuinely looking for people who share his priorities for these agencies.”

As a conservative, this is coming as a surprise to me. Trump has been a moderate New York City Democrat most of his life. His populist rhetoric during the campaign was not ideologically consistent. In fact, it was erratic and constantly changing.

When has this guy ever been a conservative or even led anyone to believe that he was? Not during this last campaign. Sure he wants to control the borders, but other than that? He has at best been all over the place on all of these issues.

And now he has put together the beginnings of a conservative cabinet that might make Ronald Reagan blush. Obviously, he still has more spots to fill and then the work will not even begin until he is nominated. But so far I am pleasantly surprised.

Is this what Trump's supporters thought they were voting for? I am just curious. Because he did not run as a conservative as far a I could see, but so far his cabinet picks appear to indicate that he may very largely govern as one.

Not a Trump voter--think he is most under-qualified President since Grant

My thoughts--
1--These picks on social policy like education and health care are not Trump's
They are Mike Pence's and Priebus and maybe Ryan's
Trump has no intention or desire of wading thru the minutia of health care reform or education
When has he or his family even SEEN the inside of a public school
They are elitists and not very well educated ones
Kushner's dad had to pay Harvard 2Million for his entrance fee
2--remember when Kushner asked Kasich if he would be VP--and be the de facto president dince Trump wasnt really interested in running the presidency day to day???
Well Pence took that handoff and likely will be the one running the social side of policy

3--Trump cares about money and foreign policy because that effects his business interests
Thus the picks for Treasury and Commerce and Transportation are people friends of his from the "swamp" of big business/banking or former government officials w/ties to the Senate
He picked hard liners for defense and nsa because he wants to have clout and carry a "big stick" to have that threat to Protect his business interests...

This is all about HIS self interest and growing his empire
He has always lied to get what he wants and this election was no different
Some people have been snookered in a massive way but we all will pay for it

Sounds like you have a problem with anyone successful and "anything" they do is to further their own empire... he is a billionaire, he doesn't care what you think, and America agrees with him... Merry Christmas..

That would mean Trump was keeping a promise. You know that's not ever gonna happen.

Draining the swamp? Ha! Trump is like the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Two separate problems that would coalesce: 1) fail to carry out TPP, 2) institute steep tariffs on Chinese imports. Trump promised number 1, and both he and his Commerce pick advocated number 2. The result of killing TPP will be RCEP becomes the trade regime for Asia-Pacific. https://www.ft.com/content/8662c3b6-...9-02899e8bd9d1

That will mean that China becomes the leader of Asia-Pacific trade relations.

Steep tariffs on Chinese imports will lead to a response from China. It's not going to be rhetoric. There will be damaging tariffs in response. Hopefully the business lobby can rein in the White House. Because this leads nowhere positive.

China was not part of the TPP, and TPP, if carried out, allows the US & allies to set the rules of Asia-Pacific trade, including minimum labor & environment standards that pose challenges for China. China would want access to the TPP market on equal terms, but would have to improve both labor & environmental standards to get there, making goods from countries like the US more competitive in the most important part of the world for global trade. TPP also had a mechanism to deal with currency manipulation--it was incomplete, but we would be on the path if we adopt TPP.

By vowing to kill TPP, Trump puts China in the driver's seat for Asian trade, and kills hope of reining in currency manipulation. That problem is only exacerbated by threats of steep tariffs, which would bring dangerous instability to the US-China relationship.

‘I think Donald Trump conned them,’ says hedge fund manager

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...d-billionaires

Hedge fund manager Whitney Tilson was feeling happy Wednesday morning.

It would suit Tilson just fine if voters who backed Trump because he promised to rein in Wall Street are furious now that he’s surrounding himself with bankers and billionaires.

“I can take glee in that -- I think Donald Trump conned them,” said Tilson, who runs Kase Capital Management.

China never complained about TPP, because they were not even in it. They are more than happy to see it go.

The 35-45% tax Trump plans to slap on imports will start a trade war. I don't see how it would be avoided.

China is happy to see TPP go because it puts RCEP--the China-led Asia-Pacific trade deal--in pole position. China wants to be the center of gravity for Asia-Pacific international trade rules. We have the chance to be the center of gravity with TPP. It would be sad to squander that opportunity. Both on this topic & tariffs, my hope is that the business lobby convinces the Trump Administration to posture, make a cosmetic change, and adopt his predecessor's stance.

Why is the Secretary of State such a good deal this time?

Or has it always been a big deal?
Is it technically a higher position than other secretary spots? Or just something with more prestige.
