Halima Aden, a Somali-American teen, wore a hijab and a burkini while participating in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant. Aden, 19, is the first fully-covered Muslim contestant in the competition.
“This pageant is so much more than just beauty. Their whole message is being confidently beautiful, so I didn’t think that I should allow my hijab to get into the way of me participating,” Aden said in an interview with MPR News. “This is a great platform to show the world who I am … just because I’ve never seen a woman wearing a burkini (in a pageant) it doesn’t mean that I don’t have to be the first.”
I found her behavior (not her personally) quite annoying.
I am pretty sure she has a nice body, but I can't really see her curves.
I participated in a beauty pageant when I was 20, bikini contest is a big part of the pageant. I enjoyed the attention and I am not going to lie about it, but pageant is not for me.
Don't like it, don't participate. Very simple concept.
No need to change the rule just to make a political statement. Attention Seeking Behavior is always overly dramatic. Let's call a spade a spade.

This is just about being PC. There's a reason beauty pageants for teens and adults have swimsuit sections, and it's not to see a modest woman completely cover up.
If she wants to compete, then by all means go ahead, but she probably won't win. And if she does, people will wonder if her win was just a PC move. Our general societal standards of beauty (especially worthy to win a contest) don't include covering the hair OR the whole body. Not that somebody who does isn't or can't be beautiful but it's certainly not how most in our society would define and describe a beautiful woman off the top of their head when asked.
You're right, we should all just take those grapes and make wine... so we can all drink up and stone some women later for showing their ankles.
