WOW, we're talking about LIFE SENTENCES for drugs.

Quote:
Commutation Grant: Prison sentence commuted to a term of 240 months' imprisonment.

Orasama Andrews – Jackson, GA
Offense:
1. Distribution of more than five grams of cocaine base; distribution of more than 50 grams of cocaine base; Middle District of Georgia
2. Supervised release violation (Distribution of cocaine base); Middle District of Georgia
Sentence:
1. Life imprisonment (December 17, 2009)
2. 24 months' imprisonment (consecutive); 10 years' supervised release (December 17, 2009)

Commutation Grant: Prison sentence commuted to a term of 240 months' imprisonment, conditioned upon enrollment in residential drug treatment.

Dale Wayne Aldridge – Unionville, MO
Offense: Conspiracy to distribute at least 500 grams of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine; Southern District of Iowa
Sentence: Life imprisonment; 10 years' supervised release (January 28, 2011)
Those are just two. Most of these sentences need to be commuted.

Our prisons are overcrowded messes due to locking up nonviolent drug users.

Obama is doing a good thing. A very good thing. I commend him.

But, don't you authoritarians worry--Sessions will start locking up people for smoking weed, so he'll fill up those empty prison cots soon.

"...mostly for long, mandatory-minimum drug sentences imposed during a war on drugs waged over the past three decades..."

Obama grants 78 pre-Christmas pardons in last-minute clemency push

When you look down the list the majority of these guys are in for drug crimes, dealing, violence and many of them also have gun charges attached to their sentence.

We have seen a push by Obama to grab guns from the law abiding in his attempt to bring the UN small arms treaty to the US that would put a real squeeze on the average citizen owning firearms.

Yet he is releasing those who were caught committing crimes with illegal guns?

What kind of message is this?
I sure hope we are done with this hypocritical thinking and we can get back to common sense justice.
First, remember the difference between a pardon and a communtation. A pardon is official forgiveness of a crime. If you get one before you get sent to jail, you don't go to jail. Before trial, you don't have a trial. During your sentence, you're basically immediately released. None of these people were currently in jail who got pardons. A pardon after you've served your sentence restores your rights.. Serving on a jury, owning a firearm, etc. My opinion.. Obama has been sorely lacking on pardons. Look at that list.. There's few people who got pardons that were convicted of anything big and many are 20-30 year old convictions.

As for commutations.. Time will tell. I basically agree with what he's attempting to do.. Hopefully, these people don't wind up biting him in the ass over it. Some of them will return to crime, no doubt. But, most got really, really harsh sentences. And most of them will have served 20 years before release.

Yes. It would be. A pardon is official forgiveness.. It doesn't make it so that the crime never happened. If you get a pardon, you still have to list on a job application that you were convicted of a felony, etc, etc.

I'm not particularly a Snowden sympathizer--he done us wrong--but Trump thinks he should be executed.

I would love for Obama to pardon Snowden solely for the entertainment value of Trump's reactionary tweet tirade.

There are certainly cases that merit a second look to give a reduced sentence or a possible pardon. Like when some young guy gets caught with a bit of drugs for the first, second or third time. In some states 3 strikes and you are out for a long time no matter the offense.

What really bothers me is how Obama and his fellow Dems paint gun owners as potentially violent people waiting to murder. They demonize guns and any one who owns one then he goes and commutes or pardons people who have actually shown to be violent and use guns in their criminal business.

What is certain is that that incoming Trump is not going to be as forgiving as Obama is.
I thought Republicans were all about reducing the costs of Government. Incarceration costs taxpayers $40-50k a year per inmate, so Trump is not going to be as forgiving to taxpayers?

There is the matter of Public safety. Yes we are , however letting felons out of life sentence is a questionable act.

Do not confuse the one time offenders for small possession charges. We are speaking to distribute and fire arms violations. It is these criminals that are the problem with gun violence. Not the citizen.

Make life Sentences of violent crimes punishable by death. If one is so concern over cost.

Your family safety is the main concern.

Obama is endangering regular American Citizens!
You have to remember that Obama embraces and treats as heros, the criminal element. While vilifying and condemning law enforcement. You don't actually think that endangering American citizens is a concern of his, do you?

Obama releasing felons Again.
I looked at some examples. A crack dealer who was sentenced to LIFE+25 years had his sentence reduced to 25 years.

Lot of murderers get less than 25 years, so even the reduced sentence is very hard.

Somethings seriously off with the sentencing guidelines for drug offences.
