My heart goes out to those who have family and friends involved. That said, it is time to ban ammunition from checked bags. There is some sporting goods or Wal-Mart by the airport of you really need the ammo after you leave the airport.
Of course it doesn't. And some other poster talking about "we'll be paying for these wars". As if him being a veteran of war is at fault for this SCUMBAG who murdered innocent people. It's nothing but an excuse for his vile evil behavior. I could give a rats ass about him serving. He probably joined because he knew he could get to kill people. Everyone who's in the military isn't a hero.
I'm also sick and tired of "mental illness" being used as an excuse for sociopathic behavior. Stop deflecting from the gun issue. That's what this is used for. He KNEW what he was doing. Plenty of people with many different mental illnesses never do anything like this. Actually 99% don't do anything like this. Oh yeah and he quoted ISIS. So there'a that too.
Also, mental illness has been around for a long time yet we didn't use to have a weekly shooting. What's changed? 24/7 instant fame on cable news for a suicidal scumbag who doesn't mind taking other people out.

Yes lets make innocent people even more vulnerable to random whack jobs. Hey there is always govt security to protect them like they did here, right?
he was trained to kill with a gun in the military.
Ummm, just a little clarity here, most military are Not trained killers as some seem to think, only those in Combat Arms are trained to fight to any real degree in combat, and those only come to around 10%, the rest are support or specialist positions. Anyone know his MOS, I have not heard, but as an NG I doubt it was Combat Arms.

I think it's in P&C because mass shootings always end up being discussed here.
But in any event, if he was known to have mental problems, and walked into an FBI office claiming he was hearing voices and the CIA was forcing him to watch ISIS videos. The local police came and got him and he was undergoing mental health treatment.
How someone like that can own and pack a gun and several magazines, check them and get on a plane just seems bizarre to me. But this is America and we are free, no gun registry, no mental health registry, so someone needs to tell the family of those killed--sorry, but they are simply collateral damage.
Personally, I do not understand why someone should be allowed to check ammunition, packed with their gun, onto a plane. Seriously , why is it necessary to allow ammunition to be on a plane at all? Funny, but the one thing I always worry about at airports is explosions--never thought about a mass shooting and I never check baggage at all (so I can get in an out quickly).
After 9/11, if you needed scissors or razors on your trip, you had to buy them after you arrived. Why can't they tell people to go buy ammunition when they reach their destination? I am simply looking for a plausible reason that someone has to be allowed to pack ammunition. I don't think that it is in the Constitution that this is a right.
And btw, the morons in the Fla legislature are voting next week on whether to make it legal to carry guns on college campuses and in plane terminals, period. They are brain dead, bought and paid for idiots, so I fully expect them to endorse it (these are the same brainiacs who refuse to make texting while driving a primary illegal offense).
Not bad
As a side note your description of what Florida wants is what Texas already has, it really has not turned out bad, surprisingly.

It's ironic that the " Blame Canada " scenario played out once again, when in fact Canada has slightly stricter rules.
"The two countries’ rules are similar, but Canada’s are somewhat stricter:
The U.S. Transportation Security Administration requires people flying with guns to put them in checked bags, unloaded, in a locked container. Passengers should tell the airline about the gun. Ammunition should also be in a locked, checked container. Under the American rules, it can be in the same locked case as the firearm.
The Canadian rules are similar: guns in locked containers in checked bags only. The Canadian rules also require trigger locks, and say that guns and ammunition should be in separate locked containers. Air Canada requires passengers with guns to show up 30 minutes early to take care of all the paperwork."
In my workplace active shooter training at work, we were told that rushing the 'shooter' was the last resort. The former police person who led the training told us to try and get out first. If that failed, we were to hide behind a locked door or other place with phones completely turned off. The last action was to rush the shooter. What if there is more than one shooter and while you are rushing one person, the other one shoots you? It's always easy to say 'yeah, I would have thrown luggage or rushed the shooter' when you are not in that situation but the reality is often more confusing and terrifying.
I have no idea why it took so long for security at the airport to neutralize the target.
