It's not dangerous per se if you know what you're doing and where you're going. I was in Hermasillo not long ago and honestly it didn't look much worse than what you might see in LA/PHX/TUC and parts of it are building up. I didn't feel endangered, a little out of place maybe.
The resort towns like Cancun have the full strength of the Federales (carrying assault weapons) and the Mexican Navy guarding the resorts from trouble.
That said, the problem with going to Mexico is that you're basically on your own and you cannot bring any weapons. The areas between urban centers have limited enforcement unless the destination is tourism heavy.
The concern is simply that with an antagonistic relationship, Mexico might be less inclined to protect the heavy US tourism spots and conversely it might embolden citizens to do things they wouldn't before. The Mexican culture is a for better or worse proud one that values its heritage.
I have friends and family there and they tell a different story. Living there is getting pretty hard for them as small family owned businesses are being taken control of by the cartel and they are threatened daily if they don't pay up.
My sister has a condo in Mexico and they haven't been back in years due to all the trouble there. People who travel to Mexico due so with no protection it's very scary. I haven't been to mexico in 8 years but according to friends and family it's gotten much worse in recent years.
The border wall, the tarrifs, and the general anti-mexican sentiment that seems to be getting louder. When you put it all together, do you think it will result in a Mexico that is dangerous for American travelers? I know that cartel gangs are ruthless, but I don't think they target Americans.
I used to party in Tijuana alot in my twenties, great memories there. Cheap beer, multi-level dance bars overlooking Avenue Revolution, and of course, the red-light district.
Now that I'm living in Phoenix I'd like visit Mexico again, maybe speak a little Spanish even. There's the border town of Nogales, and Rocky Point which is the closest beach to Phoenix. I hope it's safe down there.
Mexico is ONLY safe if you stay on the properties of the resorts. It won't change.
And yet somehow this old guy and his gal just spent 2 weeks in Yucatan putting 1000 miles on a rental without stepping foot on a resort and came back to tell about it.

Go figure.
Everyone gets lucky. They could have just as easily been victims of a crime and violence not to mention a corrupt police and government that demands bribes.

Not true, the statistics do not support your contention. The odds favor not ending up a victim.
At any rate, if you are not comfortable there, you should certainly stay away. Just let others decide on the facts, not isolated hyperbole.
I've been there twice just this past month - 4 days Mexico City, 4 days Cancun. No problems. The people themselves are generally nice. Many wanted to talk American politics.
I mean, don't wander into sketch areas and you'll be fine.

I really wonder if You venture to go New Orleans, West Chicago, Detroit, Saint Louis... If you do so, you shouldn't be afraid of comming to Mexico since Mexico is safer than those.
