Right to the question, Why is there so much hate in politics these days? Has it always been there but now with everything we do online is it just more obvious? I'm younger and have only voted since Obama first became president, but was it always this bad back in the 1990s or later?

I don't understand where all the hatred comes from within each side in today's environment. If I am a Republican why do I have to hate all Democrats, or if I'm a Democrat why should I despise all Republicans? It seems that no one can have a civilized debate. I like to think of my self as a independent, I have views that align with Republicans and also with Democrats. Yet if I say I have a certain view that leans one way I'm immediately a right wing conservative or a far left liberal. Its like all of a sudden all Republicans are super right wing conservatives and all Democrats are Left wing socialist liberals.

I enjoy debating politics. I enjoy saying a point and debating the pros and cons of such. One where if a view leans right I'm not a racist or if a view leans left I'm not a cry baby snowflake. Its become immensely hard to find people who aren't completely set in their ways. I will be the first to admit I have had views that when I discussed them with someone else they showed me a few things I didn't take into consideration and my views changed. I feel like once you set your heels in the dirt and get defensive it causes the other person to shut you out and there is no movement or legitimate discussion. Id rather bash my head off the ground than have a argument with these people.

Id love to know what this forum thinks, and get inputs from people of all areas. My opinion is that since people can post what they do when they do it we have grown this sense of self-importance that "My View is the Law and Yours doesn't matter".

My apologies if this seems like a rant, I'm just frustrated in today's political climate.

I don't think you're the only one frustrated by the current political environment. Some ones hero is another ones antichrist. That alone cause tension. Some people take the high road and others fling crap. There is no happy medium in most cases which is sad. There's not much that you can do about it but try to ignore the ignorance and hope you can find someone reasonable to debate with. I had a healthy discussion with one of my roller skating friends today and we are on opposite sides of the debate. It never got ugly, it never got disrespectful and that's the difference between having a face to face vs hiding behind a fake name. It's just all too easy to be a rectum when someone doesn't know who you really are.

Over my lifetime I have probably voted in 13 Presidential elections and this is the very first time I have ever seen such hate and discontent. The candidate I chose in several of those elections was not the winner, yet this is the first time that there has been so many protests. I believe many of the protests were paid by wealthy Democrats, such as Soros, because the wealthy will be the biggest losers with a GOP President. I have read where the violent protestors were brought in by these people. The media bias is very disturbing. The media has the power to influence elections especially with their fake news or half-truths. I didn't like Obama, felt he did absolutely nothing for America except increase racism and hatred. BUT I didn't protest or march, but then again no body offered to pay me.

Declining country.

Now, as opposed to before, or at least in a long time, some people will win and some will lose. No more rising all boats.

Some of us on this board will win and some will lose from here on out. Were no longer all united.

Like the Fall of Rome, this republic is too lazy and wealth concentrated on the few. Revolt in progress.

In my opinion the real fractioning between the Democrats and the GOP began back in 1973, when the Dems forced Richard Nixon to resign the presidency in disgrace, in the wake of the Watergate scandal. Then the nation's voters, sick to death of Nixon's charades and his hemchmen, elect a humble and soft spoken and very liberal democratic peanut farmer from Georgia as POTUS.

So the GOP goes....Really? This hick? You think you're really gonna come into DC and tell us what to do? Well well, let's see about that and how much you get done. So coalition hardball politics takes on a whole new life form. Voila! That was the precursor for what you see today. The problem in DC has not been the president for many years, it has been Congress and their childish games.

Because people feel powerless, and injecting strong emotion into a stand makes them feel empowered..as though they are part of something larger--when in fact most are faceless tools..from the point of view of our leaders. The 'Culture Wars' distract voters from the very real problems in our nation.

Hatred is cleansing and eliminates the need for critical thinking--it encourages 'simple' solutions to complex problems. Hatred distorts reality..and divides the world into two sides. It makes things easier.

Hatred..is for losers who feel the need to present themselves as being victims..and thus entitled to redress.

Scared people hate.

Income inequality has been brought up a few times, and I think is a huge wedge issue at the center of many debates. It doesn't really explain the differences between R's and D's directly, but if you look at it closely, you can see that much of the disagreement comes down to how to solve the problems related to it.

As well, there's a large disagreement over prioritization of issues. For instance, I think income inequality, global climate change, STEM education/training (in all forms, not just in traditional schools), and the repurposing of our manufacturing centers of the country (perhaps into renewable energy research and production centers) are our largest issues. Some people completely disagree, or even think some issues aren't even real (such as climate change)...It's hard to have a legitimate debate with someone if you first can't even decide on what the 'real' issues are (or with someone that is skeptical of data and science).

Also, we have had a polarized political climate for a long time now, and it has only intensified (especially with a wildcard like Trump entering the picture): Political Polarization in the American Public | Pew Research Center

I think the parties have gone increasingly further to the edges, and most people in the country (who are moderates) have been left with terrible political choices. This has caused a lot of contempt for the system and created a "helpless" feeling for many.

Couple all of this with the rise of the Internet, mobile technologies, and social media services, and suddenly it seems like there are a lot of unhappy people everywhere. This has given a voice to everyone...which is good in theory, but isn't always in practice (I'm not against people having a voice, btw...).

The rise of social media...everybody is suddenly a pundit and has a voice.

Started before that, of course with the electiion of Obama, the Left pulled harder left and embraced globalism and identity politics...Then the Right responds by electing Trump, basically giving the Left and establishment RINOS a big FU.

Call people racist and tell them to check their privilege while their jobs get outsourced, sent overseas or legislated and regulated out of existence.....

What did they expect, really?

Good post.

Fear and uncertainty does tend to lead to bad policy decisions, which can create terrible and/or over-simplified solutions that don't solve any problem (possibly make things worse).
