It's handy to have the photo of the NYT page that's clear enough to read the actual words. The NYT is NOT saying the warrants were against the Trump campaign or Trump himself. And they make that quite clear. Read the first sentence of the third paragraph. Rather, the wiretaps were to investigate Trump "associates" like Paul Manafort.
And we have no proof that the NYT claim was accurate

The way you use the term "illegally" is debatable. If the FBI or Justice Department obtained a FISA warrant the tap was legal. The issue is whether the warrant was sought for an improper purpose. Another was whether it was obtained properly and then maintained after the information discovered was innocuous for political purposes.
My gut hunch here is that Trump learned of some communication that could only have been intercepted, and it dead right on this. What is happening here, pure and simple, is that the outgoing Obama administration sewed the "waters" with minefields. There were rearranged chains of command at Justice. There were changes in intelligence sharing.
More publicly, Obama made major changes in environmental policy and foreign policy after the election but before his departure. At best Obama did what he always wanted to do but knew it would hurt Hillary's chances at the polls. At worst he was trying to make the country ungovernable, and/or make Trump look like a freak when he tried to govern.Those agencies are still effectively run by the prior administration.
That's some conspiracy, the DOJ, CIA, FBI and others have career civil servants that serve regardless of the president. Trump and his cabinet now control these agencies, no one else. He has access to everything, if he wanted to get to the bottom of this he could do so right now, but for whatever reason he would rather see this fester for awhile. Maybe because he made a mistake, maybe for a diversion or maybe because he just heard Mark Levin and mistook that as a fact.
Sean Hannity interviewed Levin last night, you can imagine all the tough questions Levin in that hardball interview. It's really not worthy of discussion anymore, the investigation will go forward and we will see what falls out.
The silence by Sessions and McMaster has also been rather deafening, maybe they missed Trumps comments.

Actually we don't in fact know the FISA requests are "facts" at this point. What we "know" is a source for the stories written said it's so. We don't know who the sources are/were, we don't know if they actually had access to know, we don't know if they got the information from someone who knew someone who passed along a leak etc etc etc....
That's the problem with leaks and stories written with unnamed sources.
What we know as a "fact" is that General Flynn was caught up in surveillance of a Russian while Flynn was just a regular citizen and that it happened while Flynn was in Trump Tower.
That's about all that's really a known fact at this point unless and until the actual FISA requests are shown to the public.
What those stories should do is push congress to launch a full and open investigation of the whole deal to see what's true and what is just B.S..
Let the chips fall where they may.

Has Obama headed over to the White House and kick tRump's butt yet? He needs to stop lying on former President Obama.
thus far, we have not seen a lie. we have seen truth being told. Obama and his people did in fact wire tap trump tower during the election. what we don't know is why.
PS we also know Obama hacked Sharyl Attkissons computer. we know that.
those are facts.
we know Obama used the IRS to go after conservatives. we know that.
these are things we absolutely know.
