A lot of the people on disability in WV are probably blue collar workers with some sort of physical problem such as a messed up back or something. I don't think you can get disability for just being overweight and a smoker as a few people in this and other threads have tried to claim.

The mental illness category is where a lot of the disability abuse is imo these are people that can work but the govt doesn't force them to.

Thing is the cities are already pretty crowded with immense competitions for the good jobs here. I can't see millions more moving to the big city especially without the kind of skills that will earn you employment there. I cant blame these people for having to do what they need to do to survive, even if that is taking on disability. The odds are immensely stacked against the people of these areas. Most likely over the generations the population of the non-economically viable areas will reduce to completely vanish. Small towns and rural areas are just no longer viable places to live and earn a living.

You don't get it. Poor southern whites voting republican is akin to "rims" on cars in many poor black communities. Its a status symbol. In neither case is it a wise investment.

Yes some Republican voters vote against their own interests. Just as many Democrat voters do the same thing. Look at failed cities like Baltimore that has been 100% Democrat run for a couple generations while the lives of such a huge swath of the population has gotten worse and worse. Both sides are guilty when it comes to voting against their interests.

Specific to poor rural/small town whites voting Republican even if it is not in their interests, the reality is it is their only choice these days. The Dems don't talk to them and sometimes denigrate them. "Deplorables" is still resonating out there. Obama's "bitter clingers" has not been forgotten either. It is hard for the Dems to win hearts and minds when they purposely insult and talk down to people. The rural poor are poor and their prospects are dim, but they are still proud people. They'll respond to anyone who treats them with respect. That's what Trump did.

That mean spiritedness is who the 2017 Democrats are.

It's pretty rich to be talking about "Democratic mean spiritedness" after voting for Donald Trump.

Wrong in 2016 and beyond. I would agree 40 years ago.

Harry Truman was hardly saying "That a girl" at HRC's Deplorables comment or BO's "clinging to guns and religion".

The Democrats hate the white working class which built their party. That group heard the message and responded as they should have-destroying your beloved HRC's lifelong dream.

Sentiments like that just reinforce that the Dems are still not understanding why they lost.

When I lived in WV in 1972 most of the young people were leaving. At this point some of the town and counties have lost 80% of their population.

So it's not true that they can't move.

Also, we have this newfangled thing called the internet and it's possible to make make money from just about anywhere.
