Speaking at the conference at Yale’s School of Medicine on Thursday, one of the mental health professionals, Dr John Gartner, a practising psychotherapist who advised psychiatric residents at Johns Hopkins University Medical School, said: “We have an ethical responsibility to warn the public about Donald Trump's dangerous mental illness.”
I have always read that no ethical psychiatrist or psychologist would ever make a long distance diagnosis.
Has that ethical consideration now gone away?
Or, has Dr. Gartner had psychotherapy sessions with trump so as to arrive at his diagnosis?
Having had a psychology course or two, I question the good Doctor's sanity...
What these psychiatrists are doing is completely unethical. While studying for my credentials one thing that was often addressed was the "Goldwater Rule."
From psychiatry.org :
Quote:
On occasion psychiatrists are asked for an opinion about an individual who is in the light of public attention or who has disclosed information about himself/herself through public media. In such circumstances, a psychiatrist may share with the public his or her expertise about psychiatric issues in general. However, it is unethical for a psychiatrist to offer a professional opinion unless he or she has conducted an examination and has been granted proper authorization for such a statement.”

Simply put, breaking the Goldwater Rule is irresponsible, potentially stigmatizing, and definitely unethical.
Diagnosing via news is unethical. And it's unethical because it generally cannot be done effectively. Stop this nonsense. It's just as bad as when the republicans try to do it.
For examples of such bad behavior, I refer you to the posts above mine doing the same nonsense.

IMHO, they should tread very carefully.
Yep, that's what I'd always thought. Great post.
The whole Trump bashing thing (and he certainly deserves some of it) has gotten a little out of hand like a trendy fad. People are in their echo chambers, get all amped up and emotional and then proceed to make major public mistakes like this guy.
Like the gay guy that went off at the Chick-Fil-A and posted it to public media feeling like he'd really done something heroic when in reality he'd been a total jerk and got fired from his job for it.

It's good to know that Trump is crazy though..........
Just like it was good to know that Hillary had AIDS and Parkinsons and about 20 other maladies.
