There are spies and there are spies.

I have been a spook; there is no denying that.

What it comes down to these days is that people have me to acquire information, be it sitting in a bar observing (lawyer's office), looking for data leaks (computers), going out somewhere to survey a place and come back with a report so my superiors could know as if they had actually been there, knowing about A and knowing about F and then figuring out about B, C, D, and E even if they aren't talking, or just getting into the books and data to figure out what makes someone tick.

Taking the last one for an example, one of the things I am expected to do when I report on a crime problem is to make a recommendation on how to destabilize the criminal market of concern. To do that, I am usually looking at the "customer" to figure out what makes them buy from that market. I am usually, therefore, looking at a lot of "dirty" people, looking in a lot of dirty places, to get those answers.

Shrug......it's what I do.

Speaking of bars, this is one of the things that I find incredible with cheating husbands that they think (or claim to think) that everyone there is like them, that no one would expose them being there since in doing so would expose the other person. They seem to have no concept that others might be a spy, an investigator (such as hired by their SO), the idiotic innocent who think it is cool to video and then post without realizing the harm to themselves, those who do not care about themselves, or just those who are mean and spiteful.

Just because one is in a fun place of secrets, don't think that everyone there is dedicated to keeping secrets as you are.

There are probably thousands of us around in one walk of life or another. The thing is that we read EVERYTHING and seeing where we have gone, what we have looked up, probably isn't going to tell to much about us because we are doing it for some bigger project.

Finally, two things. What does any competent hacker know about me? What does he know which is real and isn't? This can get into one of those little things about how people want to see my new house but I won't post pics on the Net. What he knows about me is on the Net but as they said in ST:TOS where Kirk defends himself by saying their computer banks show what a just people they are.....and the alien responds that information could be false, placed there to try to convince him.

Secondly, speaking of spooks, I got a heck of a kick when I saw that this movie existed.
The Spook Who Sat by the Door (1973) - IMDb

What a pun! Could never do it today but that took some guts even back then.

Well, to play Devil's Advocate, one might care since interpretations are always changing.

Let's take your example. Reading last night about the Canary Islands 747 crash eventually led me to Playboy Playmate of 1968 Cynthia Meyers. While her pictures were published when she was 18, apparently they were shot when she was 17.

Is that legal? It was apparently legal at the time, but in today's age, is that legal? Is it legal to have her centerfold, her puzzle? I don't know. I would hope so if not for that, then for all those old issues of National Geographic, but it is very easy to find those who will witch hunt................

.....................and those can be nasty as this demonstrated

I have been getting these calls for a few years now. This has nothing to do with the new policy. These people have no idea have kind of computer you have or even if you have one. I mess with them.

I look up a lot of strange stuff; my history could easily be misunderstood.
If a thing I read here is interesting, I'll look into it.
If I see a thread about cannibals and I Google cannibals
doesn't necessarily mean I have acquired a taste for human flesh.

I don't want to live in a world where I can't see Salma Hayek's breasts on demand.

Apart from some mild embarrassment, would you be in any trouble?
Could be very embarrassing for many Middle Eastern men.
