It's a stupid, Hallmark holiday that we are all obligated to participate in. You shouldn't need a special day to show your mother you appreciate her and be guilted into spending a pretty penny.
As for the article, its an opinion piece and the author is allowed to have her opinion.
Actually, I hate Mother's Day, Father's Day, Grandparents Day, etc. They are all fabrications of the card, flower, retail industries. BUY MORE STUFF. We've been conditioned to think there's something real behind those days but there's not.

Obligated?
The State doesn't put a gun to your head on this one (not yet anyway...don't give it any ideas).

You aren't obligated to do anything.
Why should it make gays feel "awkward"? Can they not celebrate it as two mothers or two fathers if they have children? Did they not come from a mother and father themselves?
This is showing how absurd the PC wonkettes have become

How fascist of you.
How about the sentiment that is real? It is possible that children do enjoy buying cards, flowers, candy and gifts that would otherwise be meaningless on any other day.
I only wish my mom and grandparents were still here for me to be exploited by the retail industry. In the meantime we sent an overpriced chocolate covered strawberry and fruit basket to our only remaining parent (my in-law), and I know she will enjoy the sentiment of being thought of.
Cards are a dying market in the online age. Cards used to to be cheap/affordable but with declining revenues American Greetings has jacked their prices to $6-9 per card. Too much.
