One of the congressmen leaving about 7:10 to go back to the Capitol, said a man came up and asked him if it was the republicans or democrats practicing.
If he was going to shoot them anyways, there was no need to stop and ask. He was clearly targeting Republicans and wanted to make sure he had the right target.
I guess that's a possibility - OR it could be that he wanted to make sure he and the "right" targets.
About 25 members of the Republican Congress were at the practice field. Lucky that a bunch of them were in the dugout and some at the battling cage on the other side of the fence. The shooter was mobile, trying to find better shots. He was there to kill.
Rep Roger Williams of Texas was also shot.
Apparently Williams was NOT shot - he just hurt his leg diving back into the dugout.

If the guy was there to kill and got that many shots and didn't kill one person with an open field -- do you think he was there to kill......was he that bad of a shot.
There were people scattered all over the field -- isn't it curious that not one person was fatally wounded.
I know nothing about guns, what he was shooting, if it is difficult to hit a target?
The Congressmen were lucky - Steve Scalise had a security detail of Capitol Hill Police because he in a leadership position as Majority Whip. 2 of the Capitol Hill police were shot - it took them a few minutes to get to the area where the shooting was.
I would guess it was not really common knowledge to know where the Republicans practiced in the mornings.
Media is reporting it's common local knowledge that practice has been happening most mornings for the past month.

YEP -- and he wasn't carrying a rifle when he asked. He had to get his rifle from wherever he had it.
If it was just a 'random' - I'm going to shoot whoever is on the field .... why ask?
And YES - all shooters are "Nutters", they may well be "Nutters" with a motive, but normal people don't go out at 7:15 in the morning to shoot up a bunch of guys practicing baseball ... even if they are Republicans.
Congressman Joe Barton from Texas had his 10 year old son at the field, shagging balls. Barton is their coach. I read an article yesterday about this game, I don't remember if they identified the Practice Field.

Very bad shot, but you don't have to be a good shot to purchase a rifle.

What's wrong with you? Were you hoping for more casualties?
