Exactly. Why does the US need to be first in everything or anything? That's your national pride talking. As if you are rooting for your hometown athletic team.

It's time and long overdue to let other countries take the lead. And let them pay for the privilege... since obviously, in order for the US to be first, the US government would have to foot the bill with grants paid for by our tax dollars. And since we are running at a several trillion dollar deficit, it's stupid to throw money away just to be in some supercomputer race. Let others develop it, them we can copy it like the Chinese do with our technology.

And I'd like to see the EU or South America foot the bill for developing a Zika vaccine. And all the African countries pay to develop an Ebola vaccine. Why does it have to be the US doing all the work and paying for the development?

Other countries do pay a lot already.

If someone wants to be the #1 sucker of the world, let them.

No need for us to pour our hard-earned tax money into this money pit.

Currently, the use of supercomputers is limited. Not much can't be done with many small computers. The real challenge today is to build small and fast computers - building large and fast computers is not a technical challenge.

Just keep on moving those goalposts have some humility and admit the US is no longer #1 in everything. Don't be a sore loser, it's embarrassing

Sounds like a brilliant idea.......Wonder if we could pull a bunch of countries together to improve technology to improve how we do things and the impact on our environment. That would be amazing.
I saw what you did there.

Of course, not. US is not #1 of everything and has never been.

US has been the #1 sucker of the world for a long time and I think we should pass the baton.

Not sure why this is "other controversy" because this is absolutely not political. lol

OP, please read your own article one more time

It is only the second time that the U.S. absent from the top 3 most powerful supercomputers since the organization started compiling the rankings 24 years ago. In the previous ranking, published in November, the top U.S. supercomputer—located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn.—was No. 3.
Get Data Sheet, Fortune’s technology newsletter.

The only other time this occurred was in November 1996, when three Japanese systems captured the top three spots,” the organization said in a statement.

But it wasn’t all bad news for the U.S.
The U.S. has five of the top 10 supercomputers on the list, the most of any other country.

Again. Being 1st is for suckers. And what does being number one get for a prize? Footing the bill for most of everything. And having the US being the number one preferred destination for immigrants.

Wanting bragging rights is a stupid goal.

Also, keep in mind that

The third map plots innovations, measured as patents per capita. Now, the United States takes first place, followed by Japan, Switzerland, Finland, and Israel. Sweden, Germany, Canada, Denmark, and Hong Kong round out the top ten. Turning to the BRICs, India is 26th, Russia 34th, and Brazil 41st. (Reliable data for China were not available).

lol

On the technology front at least, predictions of the rapid eclipse of the U.S. by China or any of the other BRICs are premature to say the very least. The reality is much more in line with the "rise of the rest"—a still very technologically innovative America facing somewhat greater challenges from other mainly advanced nations.
