Michelle was an unusually strong activist as First Lady, but she reminded me of some others in the past. Lady Bird Johnson, Betty Ford, and some others from both parties were all strong women who actively promoted the causes they took up.
but I disagree with the notion that Michelle was separate from her husband. The Obamas were, and remain, a very tight and devoted couple, and have been since thei beginnings of their marriage. The Bushes, both of them, have similar marriages, as have many other Presidential couples of the past.
Melania has pretty obviously chosen to follow the other path, where the First Lady stays in the background and acts as First Hostess. It's something that I think she's becoming more at ease with, and it is an important job.
I think she was nervous about assuming that position, and certainly never wanted it nor gave it very much thought, but I think she's becoming more comfortable in the role, and is doing a pretty good job of it lately.
Melania is an intelligent woman, I believe, and if she's a bit stiff and shy, that's no big deal. Lots of former First Ladies were like her. History remembers them all, of course; after all, there have only been about 46 of them in total, so they are a small and select group of women.
I think it's far too soon to say anything about how history will remember her. But the chances of her being remembered more fondly than her husband are pretty good; that's true with almost all of the wives of our controversial Presidents of the past.
For good reason. First Ladies seldom want the job, but it does offer them ways to rise to prominence that were never allowed them in their other lives. Some take advantage of that, some don't.
Just being a good supportive wife is good enough for the rest of us, I think.
Betty Ford was a drunk. Had a clinic named after her. I suppose that could be seen as an accomplishment.
