Good. Enough of the drug war and nanny state. This is a victory for social liberty.

Appropriations Committee Approves Amendment Defunding DOJ Medical Marijuana Enforcement

Strongest Signal yet that Congress Does Not Support Sessions’ Drug War Agenda

Today, the Senate Appropriations Committee voted by voice vote to approve an amendment that would block the Department of Justice from spending any funds to undermine state medical marijuana laws. The amendment – led by Senator Leahy (D-VT) – is a striking rebuke of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who had personally requested that Congress eliminate the amendment and allow him to prosecute medical marijuana providers and patients. The amendment passed with strong Republican support, a sign that Sessions is isolated politically as rumors of a crackdown on marijuana businesses abound.

“The Senate is sending a clear message to Jeff Sessions – keep your hands off states that have reformed their marijuana laws,” said Michael Collins, Deputy Director of the Drug Policy Alliance’s Office of National Affairs. “Today’s vote is a huge win for the marijuana reform movement, because in the face of real pressure from the Department of Justice, the Senate has opted to block Jeff Sessions from interfering with any medical marijuana law.”

Right now if they could just rebuke his positions on civil asset forfeiture as well the primary two threats he poses will have been neutered...

This is a victory for states rights, which I believe in.

And yes, that applies to 2nd Amendment rights and abortion restrictions as well.

This is great news! As a senator, Sessions was such a huge advocate of state rights, telling federal gov't to "butt out" of state decisions.

And yet now that many states have legalized marijuana for medicinal use, as AG, Sessions is going against his principles and trying to flex federal muscle into state business. COMPLETELY CONTRADICTING HIS BELIEFS AS A FORMER SENATOR.

Anybody who isn't drinking the kool-aid can clearly see how slimy Sessions is being on this particular issue.

It really comes down to this. Sessions is for the right of states to discriminate against the people he hates. He's against states' rights to legalize the devil's lettuce.

Good to hear though that medical marijuana is safe in places that have it. I think recreational should also be a state decision and the federal government should simply deschedule it.

So, the executive branch wants to execute the laws, but Congress won't let them......

I always laughed at all the ninny prohibitionists who believed that Sessions was their messiah and would be free to attack medical mj states and shut down their dispensaries, simply because he had a republican congress. Yet again, they've been proven wrong.
