Five years ago, future Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders described Socialist-ruled Venezuela as a more suitable exemplar of the American dream than the United States.
He called the US a banana republic!
Socialism never fails to end horribly. Once one of the wealthiest countries in the world, now one of the poorest, except for those in power.
I do remember him speaking well of Scandinavian countries, who are, by and large, doing fine.
Five years ago, back when Trump was a Democrat, when you claim Sanders said this, Venezuela was doing fine, was it not? You can criticize him for staying silent on the issue, but surely you know why he's doing it? In today's political culture, he'd be called a flip-flopper, especially since he's a political outsider. Of course he's not talking about Venezuela. It would give political hacks looking to drum up unnecessary controversy ammo. There's enough of that already.
Sorry, I don't quite understand you. Are you claiming that once someone, like Bernie, has made a statement or expressed an opinion, it has to last for all time?
Once upon a time, the world saw America as a generous, welcoming, stable, ethical country - and I'm sure many of those people have changed their minds, too.
For example, democratic socialists are generally opponents of global capitalism and free trade, but the Scandinavian countries have fully embraced these things. The Economist magazine describes the Scandinavian countries as “stout free-traders who resist the temptation to intervene even to protect iconic companies.” Perhaps this is why Denmark, Norway, and Sweden rank among the most globalized countries in the entire world. These countries all also rank in the top 10 easiest countries to do business in.

Are you people seriously this ignorant? 5 years is like a lifetime?
This country, the US, has been a shining example to the world for 240 years, and you act like 5 years should be a game changing amount of time.
The point I'm making is that Sanders held up Venezuela, which at the time WAS one of the wealthiest countries per capita. The socialist/communist ideology killed that in JUST 5 YEARS!
Is the Venezuelan model a good thing? Is that what you're saying?

Four of you instantly deflected to Trump. Wow... like lemmings.
Not really, but I do remember when people could actually have intellectually honest debates. Not so much anymore.
I guess that's the double edged sword of anonymity.
Pull all foreign aid, make them pay up with Nato and the UN, then tell them they must protect themselves and build their own army. Then see just how well they do.
The Marshal Plan is still working really well for Europe.
Comrade Bernie, like many of his ideological ilk on the left, only praise Leninist-Marxist, third-world dictatorial spittoons like Venezuela because they: A) Have themselves never had to live under the oppressive, dehumanizing conditions such regimes inevitably create, and B) Their knee-jerk reaction to any nation or regime that outwardly hates America is to lovingly embrace them as fellow travelers down the same timeworn path.
