The democrats and their corrupt media did one of their huge smear campaigns calling them all hard core racists -- even the blacks who dared to agree with the Tea Party such as Herman Cain. It originated about economics and taxes, but the Dems successfully turned it into a racial thing and people got scared of losing their jobs and reputations.
They morphed into the Trump cult, just like the Tea Party was a continuation of the religious right Moral Majority type groups. The same group of people pushing the same ideas has been around for decades using many different names.

You've never heard of the Freedom Caucus? That's the Tea Party in Congress, and they are very influential.
