They said the security guard was investigating noises of someone drilling (I think Paddock's neighbors were complaining). They surmise Paddock was drilling holes (found drills and tools in his room) into the walls/door to put more cameras up or to use the holes to fire through, so I guess he was still "setting up" when the guard appeared, hence the door ajar. That would mean the guard caused him to speed up his plan and start shooting out from the windows sooner than he had wanted to.
There are 3 stories circulating about why the unarmed guard had been dispatched to investigate, a door elsewhere on the floor left ajar, smoke and noise from a drill.
Media, like the public, are hungry for detail. How many employees and/ or LE speculated or repeated hearsay?
Can appreciate the challenges of an investigation like this.
Exactly, and probably a big reason you see no surveillance video of Paddock bringing 10 suitcases up..because it would raise the question in a civil trial why no one asked why he was one guy in a suite bringing up 10 suitcases. I've heard of travelling heavy but that's a bit crazy.
Mandalay has the big pockets here and you've got about 500 people and their families who will be looking for millions.
It's adjacent to a convention center. Exhibitors tend to have a huge amount of crap.
That we now know, he checked in 3 days earlier than previously thought, he might have schlepped his own crap in, one at a time. He had 5-6 days to do it.
The propert is the equivelent of a city, not a small botique hotel.
I hardly think that is a game changer. It may have contributed to him shooting earlier than he wanted to though. I also think the fact he was shot before it all started eliminates the theory of a second shooter in the room. The guard would have seen him leaving and probably would have been shot by the accomplice. Of course there are those that will say the security guard was part of the plot.
No shortage of online rags/ blogs reported the guard, by name, was an accomplice.
We are not talking MSM, here.
MGM and the guard should sue these sources/ consolidators.

Campos was shot during that time, while Paddock unloaded 200 rounds in the guard's direction.
"The news is not that he was shot," Napolitano said.
Napolitano said that, at that point, Mandalay Bay "knew of the existence and presence of automatic[-type] weapons six minutes before he started killing people."
Campos likely had a radio, and the casino is rife with security cameras in the hallways and on the gaming floor, Napolitano said.
He added that the casino and its parent company, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, should be prepared to be the "principal target" for lawsuits regarding failure to stop or inhibit Paddock's actions.
One thing that's really bothering me - Paddock plans this literally for over a year and even does dry runs checking into other places during similar events. Cool under pressure gambling a million dollars a day, was fine sneaking an arsenal of weapons up to his hotel room - but then his whole plan is thrown off because a rent a cop is crushing the hallway, and Paddock just opens fire blindly with 200 rounds into the hallway? Then knowing that will draw an instant reaction, waits six minutes before starting the concert shooting?
If anything, wait for the guard to pass. If he stops at Paddock's room, open up, pull him in and shoot him. It makes no sense to get freaked out because a guard passes on your floor - shoot 200 times, and then don't even step into the hallway to finish the guy off so he can't call for help? And the. Wait six minutes after knowing your cover is blown.
It's possible Paddock thought the security guard was the police why he shot though the door fired from the room. Maybe he thought they were going to enter the room nothing happens then he starts shooting. I don't know what the casino had setup with police at any rate nothing much the hotel could have done their guards carry revolvers most of the ones I have seen. I remember the 1990's when LA gangs went to Vegas and robbed a couple of casino's with AK-47's. I would think these hotels would be better armed to deal with these situations. Usually the target is the money rooms not shooting from a hotel room. I think the security guard is really lucky he didn't get killed someone was looking out for him that night.
The security guard's gofundme is at 35 grand of 40 grand goal.
As I said the lawyers are chomping at the bit now with these latest revelations about the timeline. Now the angle seems to be that the security guard actually caused the mass shooting because, due to him running into Paddock, this caused him to panic and start shooting up the crowd.
At first, Campos, a guard at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, was hailed a hero for helping guide police to gunman Stephen Paddock's room on the 32nd floor. Police said Campos was shot in the leg at the end of Paddock's assault on concertgoers—potentially distracting the gunman and causing him to panic and kill himself.
But now, questions have been raised after Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo revised the timeline and said Campos had actually been shot about 9:59 p.m.—a full six minutes before the mass shooting began at 10:05 p.m.—which means the guard could have instead led Paddock to start opening fire on the crowd for fear of being caught.
