The film was made in 1965, and at that time the "worst form of slavery" was yet to be understood by most people.
It occurred in Congo between 1885 and 1910, when it was known as Belgian Congo. King Leopold II presided over the death of something in the order of 5 to 12 million Congolese. The issue was ivory at first, but later became rubber.

Also for those interested "When I Was A Slave" contains the stories, taken in the 1920's and 30's, of hundreds of first hand accounts of slavery here in the US. There are stories of horror and stories of compassion. The stories are written verbatim, so be prepared.
Well if the black man was traditionally able to secure well paying jobs there would be no need to leave the household so that the women could get benefits.
Why can't they secure well-paying jobs? Is it their abysmal public education? That's on Dems who trap them in their horrible public schools. Is it because the micro-economies have disproportionately left traditionally Black-owned businesses and commercial centers? That's the result of Black crime and violence driving them away.

The Great Society, and the War on Poverty were specifically designed to buy votes, and keep the inner city, and other poor people (white or black) dependent on the government, and thus continue to vote DEMOCRAT. It was not intended to help poor blacks, whites, or anyone. Dependency equals control.
Exactly. Keeping people poor and dependent is the only way Dems can win elections. But few are willing to recognize that fact.

You are looking at AA in a vacuum. I used the analogy of a conveyor belt or moving walkway (like at some airports).
When you are on the walkway, there is relative position and absolute position. The direction of the flow of the belt determines the absolute position of everyone on it and the distance between you and others, while standing, determines the relative position of you to others. Right?
The "American Family" is a moving sidewalk going backwards. Past racism placed the structure of the black family behind that of the white family on the moving sidewalk. Ergo, since the end of slavery the black family structure or the amount of female headed households was higher among blacks, due to the physical oppression and incarceration of the black male post slavery (imprisonment replaced slavery as a source for free labor...as blacks were locked up for the most minor offenses, as well as false offenses, so they could work on chain gangs ).
The explanation, therefore, of why the absolute position of the black family is further behind since the 50's, when oppression is worse, is because the moving sidewalk of the American family has moved back too. There has been as great a rise in single family households among whites since 1950 as well. However, our condition relative to whites has pretty much been preserved since the 50's, meaning our family conditioned has worsened but the gap in rates between AA and whites have stayed the same or lessened. Crime has gotten worse because the moving walkway of drugs has gotten worse in America.
It’s very simplistic to think that it was one act of benevolence on the government’s part and not 50 acts of discrimination that kept black families from self-sufficiency. This argument is so old. It makes as much sense as saying giving business tax breaks keeps them from watching the bottom line. It has been proven that housing discrimination and banks were prime factors in the struggle for black families to become self-sufficient.
These programs were not supposed to do anything more than help feed and shelter children and keep them healthy. I don’t think the intention was to keep black men from wandering the earth looking for a better place or job. I can go back five generations in my family and not find two people who were born in the same place. I my children, father, grandfather and great grandfather were all born in vastly different places. If I am to have grandchildren then they too will be born somewhere else than their father.
Benevolence doesn’t ruin families, housing and job discrimination did. As recently as the 1990’s a close friend of mine, due to housing discrimination move away so he could buy the home he wanted and not the one realtors steered him too.
Because they use public assistance programs at a SIGNIFICANTLY lower rate than Black women.
But they use a signficantly more of the total spend of social welfare programs than black women or black people in general.
And my comment was about them being single mothers much more often today and you specifically mentioning black women as having "sperm donors." Do you consider those white women as having "sperm donors" too?
I'd also note that I have worked with LOTS of people who use social welfare programs and oftentimes whole white families are on them - they have a husband/wife but neither works so they qualify for everything a black single mother who works qualifies for lol.
So the whole welfare thing is always funny to me because it seems like many whites don't understand that whites get the bulk of welfare money in this country especially in regards to medicaid and SSDI (which opens the door for them to get foodstamps, WIC, so on).

Our crime rates today are the same as the 1960s by most accounts. We have less "in tact" families and a lower crime rate.
Blacks also have much higher educational attainment today and college matriculation rates and higher incomes today. Those are directly related to the lessening of racial oppression, which coincided with higher out of wedlock birthrates and single parenting.
Again, facts do not support "in tact" families being the cure for whatever huge ails you all think black people have. Facts actually contradict what you are saying. We are better today than we were in the 1950s even though there were more "in tact" families on nearly every statistical measure.
You don't get black people voting for Democrats with that language.
Black family structure has nothing to do with political party.
As already noted in this thread blacks have always had twice as many single parent led households than whites since the 1880s.
In the 1880s blacks voted for Republicans lol.
It is silly to always think that a political party someone supports is indicative of their educational or financial situation in life or that an entire group of 40 million people don't want to be self sufficient or educated. ETA: This is actually what most of the Civil Rights Movement was about - blacks wanted to be able to be self sufficient without threat of racial violence, to be protected by laws in this country, and for their children to receive a high quality education. Those things are actually the back bone of the cultural tenet of activism in black America.
