The "solid south" was solidly Democratic and the home of legal racial segregation in this country, probably because the Republicans had been the party of Lincoln who led the defeat of the South in the Civil War. After Democrat LBJ put an end to these racist laws, southern Democrats ran to the welcoming arms of the Republican party where they've been ever since. Nixon, Reagan and to a lesser extent the Bushes all took advantage of that, playing to the Republican southern racists in their party. The Democrats who've won the presidency since LBJ's time until Obama were both southerners and played that angle. The South is too large a region to ignore in the electoral college system and making a new home for southern racists has helped the Republicans greatly since the 1960s.
