Apparently you haven't noticed that bombs are the preferred method in Europe.

Bombs do have a distinct advantage in that, if placed right (like on trains in London or Madrid; both have happened) maximum death and damage can occur.....and the perpetrators might never be caught since they're long gone.

What we, for sure, have in the USA is huge glorification of guns and war. Hollywood and TV programming see to that.

Yeah but how often do they have bombings in Europe? Once a year, maybe two if even that. We have a mass shooting every week.

If there is one American thing that people in Europe / the rest of the world thinks is mental, its our grotesque relationship with guns. Even hardline conservatives in Europe think our gun fetish is absurd.

Sorry, you are woefully under-informed. A partial list of a variety of attacks, incl bombs, in Europe in the last 11 months.

Sept. 15, 2017: Terror on the tube, London
Aug. 17, 2017: Van ramming in Barcelona
June 3, 2017: Van ramming and stabbing in London
May 22, 2017: Ariana Grande concert, Manchester, England
April 20, 2017: Champs Elysees attack in Paris
April 7, 2017: Stockholm truck attack
April 3, 2017: Saint Petersburg bombing
March 22, 2017: Westminster Bridge attack
Feb 3, 2017: Louvre knife attack
Dec 19, 2016: Germany Xmas market truck attack

A similar number occurred in 2016 .....and 2015 didn't look too good either.

I won't even go into the breathtaking number of assaults, beatings and rapes all over Europe the last 5 years or so. Truly unprecedented.

Yes, those rapes , beatings and other forms of assault go unreported on and are therefore obscure. A lot of the same goes unreported and out of sight out of mind here in the US as well. And would be victims who stop these attacks and shoot or use other lethal force to do so see their attackers listed as tragic deaths in these stupid statistics.

And in places like CA or NYC they may even face prosecution for self defense. (sigh) this thread was kinda fun for a little while anyway. The ugly side of things just has a habit of sticking its head up.

Ugh. Can we please get back to the topic? It was a nice diversion from the 1,854,721 other threads discussing terrorism and crime here.

The entire continent of Europe lost 80 or so people this year to Islamic terrorism. This includes bombings, truck attacks, knife attacks etc.

We lost 94 people in the month of October alone just to spree shooters. As of 2017 we have had 554 people lost to mass shootings. Our problems with guns dwarf their problems with terrorism.

Yeah but is there anything Europeans find weirder and more controversial then our pathological fetish for guns?

Ken, speak for your own apparent pathological fetish about guns. Then go see a therapist and work through it.

Meanwhile, back to fun stories about Europe and cultures: one of my major memories about how different the peoples of each country can be was from 30 years ago.

Had flown into Brussels, spent a couple days then trained it to Bonn, Germany, hopped a ferry down the Rhine River, stayed in Koblenz, then train on to Munich for a couple days, then train to Innsbruck, Austria. So about 10 days in, essentially, Northern Europe.

I still have an exact and amusing mental image of walking onto the station platform in Innsbruck and seeing the train we would be boarding to Milan, Italy. Lots of the windows were down and people with darker skin and hair were literally hanging out the windows looking around, chatting down the line, laughing, etc. You'd think we had walked onto a different continent.

When the train departed they pulled back inside and put the windows up. Oh but, as we were pulling into Milan station, the windows were back down with all the usual suspects hanging out and yelling or laughing at their friends/family waiting on the platform.

It was a TOTAL contrast to the prior 10 days where passengers were reserved and no one hung out the train windows. Those Italians are an exuberant bunch.

We go a lot to Benidorm in Spain. In fact we're off there again next week. Like every race, the Spanish have good traits and bad ones. They can be very rude and bad mannered, but at the same time very interesting.

They love to sing in public, and dance. Judy and I will be walking along the promenade at night, and we pass restaurants and bars full of Spanish people dancing together.

We then walk through the part of Benidorm the English frequent. The difference in atmosphere is marked. The English like to sit watching performers pretending to be Rod Stewart or Cher, while getting drunk. We can behave quite obnoxiously, and don't care if the Spanish people see it.

Whereas the Spanish go out socially to converse, enjoy the company, and have a few drinks, the English go out to drink, get drunk, and make a lot of noise. We have a poor reputation as tourists in parts of Spain. Not all English tourists behave this way of course, but enough to cause great embarrassment to those of us, who want to be good ambassadors of our country.

The English at play in Spain.........

We don't go there for the culture........

This is the part of Benidorm we frequent, well away from the younger English tourists.......

When it comes to wearing tennis shoes, I'm guilty, they are never white though. It's either them or my hiking boots, they are just more stable, don't want to be biffing around and all.
