They were his words. "I don't know what they are protesting about". He does so. He doesn't want to acknowledge what they are protesting about. One that can be honest can not make a good argument.

They did defend it by trying to rationalize it, which was even mentioned by Ben Shapiro. They (government of Baltimore) even set the stage for the looting and burning (not only cars, but buildings too). The mayor said the police should give the people space to destroy and rationalized it. If anything, Shapiro minimized the reality of what they did in Baltimore.

He wasn't debating the mayor, he was debating the people on stage and not one of them defended rioting.
