Following WW1 and the break up opf the Ottoman Empire, the League of Nations gave a mandate to Britain in relation to Palestine. The League of Nations was the forerunner to the United Nations and the British Force was the equivalent of a UN Peacekeeping force.

The 1917 Balfour Declaration had suggested there was room for a Jewish population in Palestine and supported an Israeli homeland. The document formed the basis of the British Mandate for Palestine, which was formally approved by the League of Nations in 1922. However British policy was to change and it later became policy to restrict Jewish Migration to Palestine amid rising tensions and terrorism.

The Palestine Mandate lasted from September 29, 1922 to November 29, 1947, during this time there were even Anti-Jewish riots in parts of Britain following the killing of British soldiers by Israeli terrorist groups and the mandate was very unpopular in Britain.

After WW2, Britain was heaviliy criticised for turning back Jewish Ships heading for Palestine and setting up Jewish internment camps on Cyprus. The US Truman Administration were especially critical of Britain.

Britain later (given it's experience in the region) warned US President Truman and the UN against the partitioning of Palestine and the creation of a Jewish State of Israel but was ignored.

In terms of the UN Vote in relation to the partitioning and creation of the State of Israel, Britain was the only western nation not to vote in favour, instead abstaining from the voting in order not to upset it's allies.

The state of Israel was created after the UN vote in 1948.

In 2012 the UN General Assembly voted to upgrade the Palestinians' status to that of "non-member observer state". Some 41 nations - including the UK - abstained.

Current UK government policy is that it "reserves the right to recognise a Palestinian state bilaterally at the moment of our choosing and when it can best help bring about peace"

Israel benefits. Trump benefits because he can tell his supporters he is delivering on campaign results.

Iran benefits because they will no doubt exploit this, perhaps even in nuclear initiatives. Terrorists benefit because this is great recruitment material for the next round of violence.

Of course, note that these benefits are at odds.

Mideast peace, which was already a small chance of success, is likely now completely dead. So that's a loss.

This is really pandering to Trump's base, but it's hard to see a lot of strategic foreign policy upside to this move.

This was more of a symbolic move than a practical one. I'm curious to know how or if Israel's sovereign border will be affected by this. Are they planning a land grab to claim the entire city of Jerusalem, or are they planning to keep the border where it's at now and simply move the Israeli capital to the Israeli part of Jerusalem?

If the former, that could easily incite war. If the latter, then this is pretty much a non-issue (aside from the hassle of having to physically move 80+ embassies).

Israel annexed East Jerusalem already in 1980.

Trump has lit the fuse.

PERFECT timing for him, right? Did you really think that this narcissistic egomaniac was above setting the world on fire to deflect attention from the investigation of his corrupt campaign and Administration?

If this doesn't work? There's always North Korea.

Will just cause more violence from Palestinians and bolster terrorists recruiting material.

Middle East peace talks will be dead.

Idiotic move.

Well according to wikipedia it's still claimed by both Israel and Palestine, and according to Google Maps it looks like nearly half of the city (including the Old City) is on the Palestinian side.

If east is already annexed and the Embassy goes there...Then what is the big deal. Let's be honest Palestine can't fight Israel. And this dream of peace in the middle east was always a fairy tale. too much difference to work.
