Because he can't answer a question off the cuff. He has the Liar-in-Chief II (Sarah Huckabee Sanders) hold press conferences for him.

are you kidding? he talks to the press all the time. he lets the press in on cabinet meetings, when he is heading out he takes questions from the press, the point is he is talking to them all the time. so where do you get this idea that he is afraid of the press?

Now you are describing the press. They don't seem to be bothered by looking like idiots though.

They often ask the same question as the reporter before them ask.

Trump's one and only press conference (not joint 2 question fake ones, his one and only real one) was an absolute disaster, he attacked the media, the got himself into trouble and he made a complete and utter fool of himself...

thus he has avoided giving any month after month after month.

Trump is afraid, he is a coward who gets angry way too easy and can't control himself. I have never seen a POTUS so fearful as TRUMP.
